Gray Matter Studios, the guys responsible for the singleplayer campaign in Return to Castle Wolfenstein, are developing a new first-person shooter called Trinity. The story of Trinity plays in the year 2013, when a plague threatens to destroy the city of New Orleans. You play as the ‘Nightstalker’, a bio-technically enhanced one-man vigilante force with superhuman powers. Your job is to find out what the source is of the virus, and of course to save and so save the entire city of New Orleans… your basic hero stuff.

Trinity looks quite good, and at times it makes me think of both Soldier of Fortune II and Unreal II. The graphics look nice, and the engine is a heavily modified Wolf engine (which in turn was nothing more than a modified Quake 3 engine). Trinity will be single-player only, and the whole experience will be very much storyline driven. The ‘Nightstalker’ has neat features like night-vision (standard fps material), heat-signature vision (available in most game backpacks) and the ability to go in slow-motion (although not that new, it’s still a feature we don’t encounter in every game).

The slow-motion looks pretty cool: you can shoot like three guys before your first victim hits the ground. It allows for nice jump’n aim action and in combination with the heat-signature view (to track your enemies) you can use it to take down a whole room full of bad guys in a single sweep. All features are (as was to be expected) energy bar dependant, and in the beginning of the game you won’t be able to use them for very long. Of course the more baddies you kill, the more experience you get and also the more energy.

Trinity simply looks like a fun fps, and a nice single-player experience. It won’t be breaking any new grounds, but I have little doubt the new gameplay features will attract a lot of fps fans. The game is still quite a way off, they’re hoping to finish it for PC and XBOX by mid 2004, until that time you’ll just have to be satisfied with the first screenshots.
