Turning Point: Fall of Liberty (Pc)
In December 1931 Winston Churchill was hit by a taxi in New York. In our reality he survived this accident. But what if he didn't? That is the idea behind this game.
Churchill's death is a disaster for the Allies. Not only Europe and Rusland are completely conquered, the United States too are almost completely crushed by the German war machine. The game starts in the 50s with a full-scale attack of German bombers, paras and even zeppelins and blimps on New York. You play as Dan Carson, an ordinary construction worker, who joins the resistance once he has escaped New York. War is a booming business for the weapons industry and that is also visible in this game. Because of this, special (even bizarre) weapons based on actual designs that never went beyond the experimental phase that are normally not available in WOII-games, are yours to take. An example are the improved blimps used by the Germans to shoot you from above.
Without a weapon you are not completely lost. Carson knows a thing or two about martial arts and therefore is, with a little fighting, able to eliminate an enemy (and take his weapon) or use him as a human shield. Taking cover is difficult, not only because of destructable environments (in the preview only in one mission yet), but also because a lean function is missing and Dan apparantly doesn't like to lie down.
There are no health kits or anything like it. Just as is already seen in other games (for instance Call of Duty 2), a continuousg rain of bullets will weaken the character until he manages to take cover and by doing so 'recharges'. The weakening is visible in Carson's sight, that, beginning by the edges, blurs and eventually turns black and white.
Sometimes there are other resistance fighters, soldiers or citizens with weapons who assist you during missions, but you cannot depend on them. They just die ridiculously fast. Wether that has to do with a dumb A.I. or just a super low health in comparison with the hero, is not clear. Thus you usually are on your own.
Realism does not seem to be the main focus of the game's developers. The main character can take a lot of bullets and the graphics seem to be a choice of style rather than being photorealistic. That's good news for the system requirements, of course. That does not mean the image is bad, it is a style that quite fits the game. There are however still some problems with the framerate and that is possibly why aiming doesn't always go smoothly.
Turning Point: Fall of Liberty goes oldskool with more focus on gameplay and less on graphics. This game has what it takes to be having fun with it. The question remains, wether it will provide fun long enough to make this a keeper.
