Wii Play (Wii)

Apart from golfing, tennis and baseball, Wii Sports has included boxing and bowling as well but you’re very much mistaken if you think that that’s the only new intelligence coming from the Nintendo front. The developers have also created another game, called Wii Play. And let’s find out if it’s a potential GMD… or not.

Just as its counterpart Wii Sports, Wii Play is a compilation of mini games specifically designed for the exhaustive usage of the Wiimote. From the main menu of the game we could conclude that there are nine mini games but the version we got in our hands only counted seven. Those seven however made it abundantly clear that this game is more addicting than crack. It will be undoubtedly a true clash of family members to reach that precious number one position.

Table Tennis - All the games are intended to let the player adjust to the functions of the innovative controller. With Table Tennis, they concentrated on the horizontal movements but do not expect to wave intensely before your television set. A quick reaction and just waving the Wii Remote to your left, right or centre is more than enough. the strike and hit will be made automatically, the number of hits will be counted and the longest rally is immediately the high score.

Find Mii - This game was one of my favourites. You start the game with a minute on the timer and one assignment after another. Most of the time your screen is filled with little Miis, in the beginning rather immobile but after a few levels they can be rather evasive by swimming, walking or flying around the screen. Their clothing is different but the most important part is their face because you have to find two or more identical Miis, the fastest Mii or the rebel Mii. With the Wii Remote you can point out a Mii and enlarge him/her/it which gives you the ability to check on more detailed and subtle features of the Mii in question. Point out the correct Mii and you’ll gain a point, pick out the wrong one and you’ll lose one; it is that simple. If you completed the assignment you’ll gain some precious seconds and advance to the next level which will be always a bit more difficult than the previous one. The game ends when you are out of time. Just like the Blur song.

Shooting Range - Yes, Duck Hunt is back! After the cheering is done, we can tell you that it is time again to shoot down balloons; UFOs and of course ducks. No need for more info about this one, I guess.

Laser Hockey - Close your eyes and imagine a colourful Pong game. Add an extra dimension by allowing the tablet to move diagonally and add another one by enabling it to rotate. This is the best way to describe Laser Hockey. The purpose of the game is, well, to ball your opponent’s hole and the goal justifies the means in this one! Whether you want to play it hard or try a more gentle approach, it really doesn’t matter as long as you fill that hole.

Viewed but not played
Pose Mii - A minigame that shows that you can not only move but also rotate the controller. In this title you’ll control the picture of a Mii with stretched legs and arms and the purpose is to rotate it in such a way that it fits in the bubbles that are coming down but can not touch the ground.

Billiards - You’re aiming for the white ball with your own Mii while trying to get all the other balls into the pockets. This game reminds you that you can move your controller also back and forth and just like in real billiard you can hit the white ball at any place allowing you to play with effect, so we hope, or just hit it with brute power.

Fishing - Don’t confuse this game with the fishing as you might have seen in Zelda. This one is more of a swimming pool with cardboard fishes. Pretty funny.

In the menu were two other icons with a question mark and it will just take a bit more patience to now which games are behind those doors.

Wii Play is once again a typical Nintendo product; no high def ultra anti aliased 1080p Unreal 3 engine is at work here, nor do you have to memorize a quintillion combinations of buttons. Just boot it up and start to play; these games are extremely accessible and without a doubt very addicting. And there’s more; Wii Play will be sold for the normal price of 49€-59€ but the package will include a free remote!
