Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty
Ratchet goes on in his search for Clank in Quest for Booty, but can the game match with Tools of Destruction? Could the short playtime hinder the good elements of its predecessor?
Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty starts as a fable: 2 voices, which you’ll recognise later in the game, tell you what the quest of Ratchet is on the basis of a treasure map. Clank is kidnapped by the Zoni and Ratchet wants to bring him back safely. The story begins where Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction ended and will be followed up in 2009. You’ll notice the humour immediately: two voices want to present themselves as good as possible, but the other voice tells you the reality so the first one is annoyed. You won’t be rolling on the floor laughing, but there will be a smile on your face.
The action starts on pirate ships where you fly from one to the other by using catapults. These appear throughout the entire game and will use your Omniwrench Millennium 12. This wrench gives Quest for Booty something extra: because it is electrically charged, you can use it to move platforms, pull the catapults down, open bridges,… Some puzzles have to be solved by using this tool. Another cool gadget are the gravity boots: with these you can run on walls of metal.
Ratchet can count on different weapons, useful equipment and Talwyn, his partner. Too bad, he loses his gadgets in the water at the start of the game and you’ll have to fight your enemies with only your wrench for a while. A big part of Quest for Booty takes place in a city on the
island where you came ashore. You’ll have to do some quests here for yourself, but also for the inhabitants. When you’ve completed a quest, for instance repairing a wind turbine, the locals will thank you. As you complete more of these, Ratchet becomes a hero for them. Thanks to the interaction with the other characters the city feels alive.
The environments are each time original and colorful, though due to the short playtime of the game, about four hours, there aren’t a lot of different locations. Also your opponents are a lot the same: you’ll usually fight against pirates and occasionally a special enemy will attack you. When these pirates come close to you, they often tell you something funny.
The graphics of Quest for Booty are very good. They aren’t only beautiful, but they create a specific atmosphere. The game between shadow and light is very important in this title and you’ll even have to complete a quest by projecting the correct shadows on the wall. The music helps creating atmosphere as a surplus value for the game.
Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty is a good games that looks very nice. The story isn’t very complicated, but there is an enchanting atmosphere in the game. The magnetic powers of your wrench give Ratchet more possibilities to complete his quest. Though the game is short, it won’t bore you a moment.
