The Nintendo DS is becoming more and more a haven for strategy games. In this Age of Empires: Mythologies we get a new portion of turn-based strategy on our place which is - as the title suggests - is loosely based on Age of Mythology.
The single player campaign contains three different parts, one per society with accompanying background story. More decor than that, however, isn't present. The missions play on a small map and are fairly short. Only the last missions can go on a little longer due to the difficulty degree. Unfortunately there's not a lot variety in mission goals: usually it comes down to defeating the enemy and after a while it all feels quite repetitive. The difficulty degree also can't be chosen which makes it unsuitable for the absolute beginner as well as the die-hard fanatic. Luckily there are also some multiplayer possibilities including hot seat (where you pass on the DS)

There are three types of units: mythological creatures, heroes and people. Next to that men are also divided in classes like cavalry, light or heavy infantry and so on. This has strategic consequences of course: mythological creatures are stronger than human opponents while heroes are especially good at taking down these creatures but vulnerable for human attacks. The same goes for the classes: spears take down horses, cavalry defeats archers and so on. The attacker, however, is always in the advantage which makes it all feel unbalanced. This prohibits also a defensive approach which can hardly be seen as a positive point for a strategy game.

Only two resources are present in the game: gold and food. For certain things you also need favor. Gold mines and mills can only be built in certain places which are scarse but your winnings are quite big in exchange. Overall you don't need to spend much time on building and things turn out ok pretty quickly so the focus is clearly on the military. As said earlier there are three societies: Egyptians, Greek and Germans. These differ mostly in looks and the way they collect favor. In theory they also have a different playing style (Egyptians for instance are better at defense and Germans better in offense) but in practise there's little of that to be noticed.

Both the stylus and the keys can be used to control the game but the latter are a bit easier and simpler in use than the styles. When a unit attacks another one you get to see a short fight movie on the top screen. Quite fun if it wouldn't always be the same one. Luckily they can be turned off.

The sound is rather limited: there's some music and an effect here and there, but nothing noticeable.

Although this game certainly has its flaws it's still fun to play at times and that counts too. The downpoints even disappear to the background now and then, to tip the balance the wrong way again after some time playing. Consume with caution.

Age of Empires: Mythologies for the DS is like the travel version of a board game: it does its job if for practical reasons you can't play the real deal but for the rest it's just a shadow of what it's based on.

PRO

  • Multiplayer
  • Economy isn't too complicated
  • Fun (but only for a while)

CON

  • Little variation in mission goals
  • Difficulty degree can't be altered.
  • Unbalanced
