STAND UP SOLDIER, it’s time to pick up your weapons and to move yourself to the battlefield. The enemy has taken control of an important oil platform and it’s your job to take it back! Don’t even dare to turn your back on the battle…
Those couple of phrases would be a perfect way to describe the atmosphere in BF2:MC. Fierce battles with no way out. In other words: war at its best. This game really displays nearly every aspect of war: the vehicles, a massive arsenal and an amount of enemies to pee your pants.
Luckily you're never alone, you always have an entire team at your disposal to get the job done. From engineers to support class, with each having their own special abilities. Magnificent graphics, sound and gameplay make this a top-notch game. Sadly enough, the long loading periods are back again.

Luckily you're never alone, you always have an entire team at your disposal to get the job done. From engineers to support class, with each having their own special abilities. Magnificent graphics, sound and gameplay make this a top-notch game. Sadly enough, the long loading periods are back again.
As I mentioned earlier, you’ve got the choice to play as one of many classes. You’ll be able to be a Special Forces, Support, Engineer, Assault or Sniper unit. Each type of unit has its own kind of weapons and special abilities. For example: the sniper can laser-target enemy vehicles. By doing this he calls in a jet that bombs or shoots the vehicle to pieces. The support class on the other hand, can heal his companions. Quite convenient in battle!
Then there are the vehicles. You have all sorts of them like tanks, APC’s, helicopters and even snowmobiles. In BF2:MC you can take control of all that are on the map. I can give you another tip about these: they can determine the course of battle and change it in the blink of an eye. This makes them a very important part of the game. Most of the time it will go like this: the team with the most vehicles will win the game. Infantry isn’t that strong against an armored truck you know…
BF2:MC is a multiplayer based game, but it also has a single player mode and a darn good one too! It is probably best used to train your skills for the real thing online.
In single player you have the choice to play one of two modes: challenge and campaign.
The campaign mode lets you play out a couple of missions linked together through a story. Your objectives are blowing up bridges, defending a certain area, … At the end of each mission your performance is evaluated and you’re awarded some points (the better you performed, the higher your points will be). The more points you get, the more weapons you unlock. These weapons can be used in the campaign missions. You can also earn medals by achieving “special goals” such as killing 10 opponents without dying yourself.
In the challenge mode your objectives are nearly the same as the ones in campaign, but you’re bound to a time limit, a vehicle, … Except for these limits, the difference between the 2 modes is non-existent.
The single player has another nice feature: Hot Swapping! With this nifty little thing you can teleport yourself from one character on the battlefield to another. This way you’ll have a bigger effect on the entire battle since you’re going to be present on nearly every front. The Hot Swap animation is another nice element! The camera actually moves to the targeted unit but without hitting or crossing any other object! It reaches the target cleanly.
The multiplayer on the other hand doesn’t have the Hot Swap. Here you can spawn as any unit class near a flag (= spawn point) of your choice. There are 2 new game modes, the first one is capture the flag (this doesn’t really need any explanation now does it?) and secondly there's the popular conquest mode. Here the objective is to take and hold as many flags as possible. You can capture a flag by going and staying inside the flag area. The team that holds the most flags for the longest period of time or captures all flags and kills all enemies wins the game.
As I said before, you can earn medals in single player. You can do the same in multiplay and you can earn them the same way you do in single player. You can also earn ribbons and promotions through a point system. Though the points from single- and multiplayer are separated, the system remains exactly the same.
Another great aspect of the game are the controls. They are one the easiest I’ve ever had the pleasure of using. For once you don’t need 845 fingers to do a special move. In BF2:MC it’s 1 button to aim and another to fire. Simplicity in all its glory!
What I do miss in this game is speed. Ok, intensity in battle can get rather high, but the time between battles can get quite long. Sometimes you have to walk half a map before you find a sucker to kill.
I myself am a big fan of BF2 on the PC and I just couldn’t help it, I had to compare the two. In the end it seems I prefer the PC version. It just has that little extra in speed! Plus you don’t have planes in BF2:MC and that is something that really puts the limit to this kind of games. Another reason would be the realism. The PC version is just that little bit more realistic than the game is on console and that was the last drop for me. Realism is an important factor in my opinion, I have the feeling that BF2 on the consoles is more like the little brother of the PC version.
Although the graphics in BF2:MC are very nice, I sometimes found myself searching for an enemy that was no more than 10 feet away from me. The visibility in this game isn’t always what you’d expect. (And I didn’t miss him because of some HDR effect).
And then there's the everlasting Battlefield franchise problem: the time needed to load a map seems to take forever! Although it’s understandable given the size of the maps, the waiting period remains a pain in the neck.
The negative points don’t take away the fact that BF2:MC is one of the better war-games with a time setting in the present day out there. A nice and simple gameplay, lovely graphics and sounds to make you shiver are the key to success. It’s the ultimate cocktail of arcade, simulation and a sniff of realism with loads of shooting and strafing!
This game has something to offer to seasoned as well as new gamers. I can highly recommend this one to every gamer out there.
