The popularity of the puzzle genre certainly has risen over the last year and also Buzz realised this. The quizmaster comes to PSP with as goal to improve your brain cells.
Buzz! Brain Bender starts immediately with a test to see how well your little grey cells are developed. This interrogation consists out of four puzzles that each test a part of your brain: memory, analysis, calculating and observation. Afterwards you get the results in the form of kJ (Kilojoule). Being funny as he is, Buzz also gives you an object that could be powered by your brain power.
After the test he advises you to solve some puzzles as training. In Buzz! Brain Bender there are four puzzles for each of the four parts of the brain. As of a certain amount of kJ you get a bronze, silver or gold star and once you've received a medal for each puzzle you can increase the difficulty degree.
Solving these puzzles is done with the four buttons on the PSP which kinda replace the buzzers from the PS2. Remain concentrated as you won't always be able to use all of them. The controls are very simple but good, just like the presentation of the game. Everything runs smooth and looks nice and the transition to a next game is nicely displayed as a journey through your brain.
In the end there are only 16 - well-varied - puzzles present and that alone won't keep you occupied for very long. To increase the game's lifespan there's difficulty degrees but especially the wizard prizes and challenges help with this. The first are like Trophies and achievements that you can earn by answering faster than three seconds. The challenges on the other hand can be unlocked by playing but often it will just be more or less time than you would get with a normal game.
Throughout the game you get graphs per part to check how you're improving (or not). To look at the full progress you can do another test and those that want to compete with the people around him/her can do a brain battle. Here you can choose between different games, difficulty degree and the amount of players. Each time you have to pass through the PSP to the next player and at the end you'll see who has won. Although this form of multiplayer is probably the most fun as you can put pressure on your competitors an online mode wouldn't have hurt.
Buzz! Brain Bender is a fun game to play on the PSP. Everything is done perfectly and Buzz all too often comes around to make a stupid joke which you can skip when you get tired of him. The puzzles go from calculating to remembering cards but few will find them too easy. Not all are equally fun though but that probably goes with training your brain. Thanks to the unlockable parts and the brain battle you'll play a bit longer but an online mode should not have been left out.
