We all know Call of Duty. It was and still is one of the best WW2 shooters on PC. Thanks to the intensity of the - although linear scripted - singleplayer campaign and the excellent online part this game is still played a lot. While waiting for the recently announced successor, Activision tried to recapture this success on the consoles with Call of Duty: Finest Hour. Some time ago we checked out the Gamecube version but we also wanted to see how the game does on Xbox.
Just like in the pc-version you get a campaign in three parts. Personally I find it a pitty that you don't get sucked into the story like with Half-Life 2 or Doom 3. The advantage on the other side is that the variation is guaranteed and that the makers have the freedom to let you experience the most important battles from the second World War. And that's exactly what they've done, you use your guns in Stalingrad as a Russian, in Germany as American and Africa as a Brit. Thanks to the briefings, cut-scenes and nicely worked-out characters the makers succeed in bringing forth a nice and appealing storyline.
This variation, although the typical FPS elements are present here, can be found also in the gameplay. The obligatory sniper mission is present, you can also start working with a fixed gun or ride around with a vehicle, in this case a tank. Little problems on that part but it's unfortunately the actualy shooting and moving where CoD:FH lets you down.
The iron sights are present like on PC (if you use them, you'll bring your rifle more closely to your eye so it's easier to aim) but the feedback on whether or not your target is hit is rather clumsy. Also throwing grenades has been implemented badly since they really tend to go anywhere once you let loose of them.
On the other hand, the intensity of the fights is very good: you're hardly ever alone and your colleagues are always very busy with making life miserable for the enemy. Also there are constant explosions, grenades coming in, yelling, and a lot of other happenings that make you feel like you're really part of WW2. It may be clear that the typical atmosphere of the pc version has been succesfully ported. Without a doubt, this is the biggest positive thing of the CoD series but as a counter argument we get the lack of savepoints (playing about half an hour to get killed and having to restart is a bit too much). Even worse for me is the fact that the game crashed several times during playing. Also I noticed quite a lot of clipping problems.
The graphics are good but we've seen better lately on XBox. On top of that, the framerate dares to seriously drop when a lot of effects are shown. The weapons are nicely detailed and also the models and animations can be called a succes.
Most things, including weapons, sound good but we can't really give more than a mediocre score to this part and the same goes for the music. The voice-acting during the movies has been done great however and the shell shock effect definitely deserves a seperate mentioning as it perfectly shows how it's like to feel a grenade explode right next to you.
The Multiplayer part is a skinned version of the pc game but that could have been expected. Split-screen isn't supported but you do have the ability to play with up to 16 players in 4 modes: DM, Team DM, CTF and Search&Destroy which is some kind of adjusted Counter-Strike. The 8 maps give enough variation but also some lag at times.
Call of Duty: Finest Hour on Xbox is unfortunately not the topgame it was on PC. The multiplayer offers nothing special and looks pale compared to recent violence like Halo2. Also the singleplayer is less than on the PC due to some bugs and little problems concerning the feeling. What we win on intensity and atmosphere gets lost in length as you won't need more than 10 hours to see the end credits.
If you're looking for a nice WW2 game on Xbox, this will most certainly be an atmospheric and tasty go-between. If you can only afford one game a month, I suggest you start looking elsewhere, especially if you've tried CoD on PC already.
