The competition between fight games is harsh. It’s not easy to compete against titles like Tekken, Soul Caliber and Street Fighter. Dragon Ball, the incredibly popular anime series, has already got some fight games on its name and Atari is known for the great Dragon Ball games they deliver. Will this game deliver sufficient innovation?

Although we all secretly hoped for another, though not specifically new, storyline than the one we are used to play from the previous Dragon Ball Z games, Atari kept their usual formula. Once again the story begins at the moment where Goku en Raditz are fighting for their lives and when you start playing the story mode you are immediately dropped in a fight without any explanation concerning the storyline of the anime series. So it’s necessary, as in the previous Dragon Ball games, to have some background information about the story to fully enjoy this game. People who are not familiar with the anime series will have some big question marks when playing the story mode

Of course, the brawls on their own are very entertaining. Atari deserves a trophy for the great job they did creating fast and full of action fights like we are used from the series. It’s almost impossible to follow the action with your eyes. From one corner of your television to the other. combat on the ground, in the air, changing of background… Button bashing till you have rigid fingers! And for the people who want to impress with powerful or fast attacks it’s always possible, and highly recommended, to follow the tutorial.

Unfortunately the high speed of the combat is interrupted by the irritating ‘Drama Pieces’. These are story related scenes that pop up every time you achieve a certain thing which can vary from accomplishing a special attack or receiving high damage. After such a scene your character is influenced with some positive effects like an increase in speed or powerful punches. Those Drama Pieces are in my opinion very irritating, very repeatedly and not well developed.

A huge pro compared to the previous Dragon Ball Z game is the addition of an online modus. Here you can really go nuts and prove that you are the real Goku or Gohan. Online brawls are much more exciting and give an extra dimension to the game. It’s like you're fighting against a real person. Sweat dripping from your head, your fingers hurting of all the buttons you have to smash, our male ego wants to win and so it will. And like we are used from Xbox Live the complete online event is played without any lag. Nothing but satisfaction for this mode..

Graphically Burst Limit is a beauty. It’s obvious that the emphasis lies in copying the anime series and not to create a realistic world. It’s like you are watching the cartoon in high definition. Burst Limit contains a DTS Soundtrack which is sublime. Unfortunately the voice acting is terrible. The voices are not synchronous with their mouths and it’s like each character has only a script of three sentences.

Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit is more of the same. Little innovation, little extras. Nevertheless!? Is it wrong to reuse a good formula? The whole package is solid, exciting and fast brawls, detailed graphics and an endless online world leads to one hell of a game. If you are a Dragon Ball Z enthusiast you probably already have this game and if you are not a devotee of the series it’s time to become one!

PRO

  • Fast brawls
  • Detailed graphics
  • Online modus
  • Ka-Meh-Ah-Meh-AAAAHHH

CON

  • Horrible mouth synchronization
  • Little extras and innovation
