Asians are weird people. That has nothing to do with their skin color, length, eyes or anything. To our standards they're just a bit different, end of discussion. For example, just compare a Japanese game show with a European one. On TV you see for instance a show with as goal: stay in bath with boiling water as long as possible so the titties of a Japanese beauty could bounce up and down. Well, you don't see that over here!
As such, also cartoons are quite different. When our kids are exposed to Asian ones, no doubt they'll be laying in front of the TV after five minutes, suffering from what seems to be an epileptic attack. Asians on the other hand have become immune to this thanks to years of training.
Nonetheless we sometimes see a cartoon rise from the rice fields in Asia that manages to win over a crowd of people over here. The most well-known example is no doubt Dragonball Z, the Japanese success story that has loads of fans all over the world for years. Therefore we today check out the newest videogame spin-off in the series: Budokai Tenkaichi 3. Bukakiiiiiiii! Euhm... I mean... kamehamehaaaaaaaa!
The storyline of Tenkaichi 3 is completely in line with the television series. The single player campaign from now on is also called "Dragon History". But only the name has changed, also the presentation of the story an sich has been polished. Next to the traditional campaign there are other modes like Dragon World Tour, in which a tournament is simulated, and Evolution-Z mode in which we can tune our character with all kinds of spoilers and spinners, and finally also... an online mode!As such, also cartoons are quite different. Nintendo has talked about it a lot before the launch of the Wii but until now they didn't manage to do a lot with it; the online capacities of the Wii are thin compared with other next-gen consoles. We saw Pokemon Battle Evolution and Super Mario Strikers Charged go on the worldwide web, but that's about it for us Europeans.
Luckily also Tenkaichi 3 dares to fight online, and that immediately the reason why this game drew my attention. Sadly enough there's little positive to be said about this. The menu and friends lists are well done but that's it. The game doesn't play nice, the lag spoils the fun and next to that you don't see the difference between online and offline. Where's the possibility to shout names at your opponent?
Graphically Tenkaichi 3 Wii looks identical to the PS2 verion. This sounds worse than it is as the latter looks extraordinary well and the game easily stands its ground next to other Wii titles on the market eventhough we know how high the level there is... Also nothing specific can be mentioned about the sound.
The biggest difference with the PS2 version, next to the online mode, is no doubt the possibility to get going with the Wii-mote. It sounds great to take the remote in your sweaty palms and shoot a fat fire ball in the face of Videl (little Gohan's girlfriend).
The sad truth is that the Wii-mote doesn't come to justice in Tenkaichi 3. Fans love the series for its fast, accessible and at times hectic gameplay but to be able to decently use the motion controls, things have to go a bit slower. Now you'll catch yourself waving fiercly with your arms, hoping on some special move. The idea is fun, but how it's implemented is a lot less fantastic. You can also play the game with a Gamecube controlller, but then you can better buy the PS2 version that's available at a lower price.
If you're looking for a good fight game and don't have a Budokai in your possession, then this one isn't a bad purchase. However, don't buy it for te online mode or the extra characters as you'll feel ripped off. Also the changes in gameplay compared to the game's predecessor don't justify a purchase. In short Dragonball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 is no doubt the best and most complete fight game on the Nintendo Wii, but that's mostly thanks to the lack of competition.
