Retro is in, and I'm kicking in an open door with that. EA Replay tries to jump on the bandwagon and offers the PSP-gamer 14 oldies, one worth the label of "classic" more than the other. Fun is that there are a couple of games we don't usually see in compilations or on the download services of 360, Wii or PS3.
Unfortunately both the games as well as the collection as a whole show too many shortcomings to justify a purchase. Reason for this is in the first place the decision to base the ports on the Genesis or SNES-versions of the originals.
EA Replay appealed to me because of Ultima: The Black Gate, Syndicate and Wing Commander (including Secret Missions), but quickly I noticed this aren't ports of the original, legendary, games but of the horribly bad SNES versions. A big disappointment, Syndicate is barely a shadow of itself and within three minutes it spoils the memories you have. Wing Commander is almost impossible to control and suffers from the widescreen image. Bummer, and we've only just started...
Lesser known to me were B.O.B., a bad platformer, Budokan: The Martial Spirit, equally bad but a fighting game this time, and also capable of making you cry is Virtual Pinball, a game that's endlessly inferior to any free stuff you can find on the web.
Next to that you get a couple of Road Rash games (where you get to race with a bike and kick competitors) that, I must admit, play pretty decently and managed to keep me interested a little longer. Also the graphics here are decent but the question remains: who wants to play this in times of MotoGP6? Desert Strike and Jungle Strike are also present and making a stand. Other reviewers apparently found Mutant League Football the best game from the collection and I can understand that in some sense, but American Football with monsters is still American Football for the European gamer... something we hardly understand nor are interested in.
Graphically as well as in the sound department the makers tried to respect the original versions but especially the screen tends to cause problems. The 4:3 possibility tries to solve some isues but even then fans of pixel-perfect tributes won't be able to get warmed up for this UMD. Also the extras won't give you any excitement as they're quite absent and also the dressing up isn't too great. Next to an overview of controls and a couple of misplaced tips it's crying all around. Saving and loading, fortunately, is possible!
The use of such compilations keeps wondering around in my head. None of the fourteen games manages to justify a purchase and the most well-known titles are based on the sub-par SNES versions. Also the extras won't get you interested and only the over-nostalgic gamer or ultimate collector might find this one interesting.
