Echochrome is a game for puzzlers. Brains will be bent in all kinds of curves and you'll be more than once with your hands in your hair while playing this PSP game. M.C. Escher, who you probably know from his "impossible" optical illusions, was used as inspiration for the 56 levels that you get on your plate.
The first thing we liked wasn't the gameplay, but the fresh black&white graphics that due to their simplicity and minimalistic design perfectly draw the surroundings on your screen and at the same time are a breath of fresh air for those that are fed up with loud of grey visuals. You'll move those settings instead of your man by the way. The idea is to rotate the puzzles so that it visually looks like holes are filled, paths get laid above or below holes or suddenly touch each other. All this to collect four so-called "echoes" and reach the exit. Some handyness is necessary to correctly makes these movements so that your character can take the road you lay out (he only stops when you pause the game), but you'll mostly have to think about how to conquer the obstacles. Luckily the controls are well-done and it's rather easy to click things together so that the frustration level remains low. Beware as you'll have to start over again more than once and you get a time limit which is the reason why those with less patience can better leave this game alone.
The puzzles remain interesting for those that like this stuff and the accompanying levle-editor can prolong the lifespan of the game for the die-hards. As a warm-up you can adjust the existing levels but you can invent some completely new ones as well. The editor is powerful and allows to make some great maps that you can afterwards share with friends. If you would buy the PS3-version of this game (through the Playstation Network) there are even more possibilities for sharing.
Gameplay, graphics, interface have all been covered so only the sound remains. Also that is quickly done as next to some footsteps and a female voice you won't hear much. Just like the graphical style this approach fits perfectly with the gameplay which gives Echochrome a unique feel.
In the end there's little more to say about this title. Check the screenshots and how high you score on the "I love difficult puzzles" scale. If it's positive then you should go to the shop and buy this charming title which no doubt will bring you hours of fun.
