Enemy Territory: Quake Wars on PC was a good game, even though it couldn't really make the impact of a real hit-game or engage a revolution. The console public is something else and the question is if ETQW can have the same success there as it did on PC.

This game isn't played by yourself, or that's what was revealed by our play-test. There's no singe player storyline and cut-scene lovers will have even less of what they crave for than they had on PC. You shouldn't expect more than some botmatches on steroids if you don't have Xbox Live or a broadband connection.

The A.I. does its thing, but it feels very 'inhuman', which is normal since this game was built around the multiplayer battles which are still based on teamwork. You'll have to go through some class-based objectives with the entire squad after which the frontline and spawn points are moved.

It all sounds more complicated than it really is, because after some time (mostly thanks to clear guidelines, maps, the HUD and icons) you'll have a good idea of how to do good things and not look like a fool during your first online steps. The excellent level design and very well balanced races still contribute to letting the gameplay run as smooth as possible.

This same ease returns with the graphics, which are mostly functional and complete the gameplay experience, but they're certainly not exciting or sexy. On top of that, there's some weird lens effect which gives everything a very artificial feel. Luckily the same doesn't go for the gunfights. The system works like a charm with your controller, but the PC still has the edge when we're talking about aiming.

Quake Wars has become a well developed game with great controls, great level design and balanced gameplay. Sadly the game is stuck in "averageness" in a bunch of other aspects. We'll need a lot more to feel enthusiastic about yet another, old-skool feeling class-based shooter. For the competitive FPS-fan this "functional game" will be a nice choice, but for all the other gamers out there it will probably be too dull and mediocre in comparison to other alternatives which offer more options.

PRO

  • Excellent gameplay
  • Balance, weapons, maps all finished to the smallest detail

CON

  • Graphics too average
  • Only online multiplayer
  • Little new..
