By now, we all know Q Entertainment from Lumines for the PSP and the somewhat less well-known Meteos for the DS. The success of these games was clearly caused by combining addictive gameplay with an original concept and an interesting mix between visual and auditive elements. With Every Extend Extra they used their successful formula again.
Unfortunately, this time it isn't as great as we're used from them eventhough the concept is once again very original. You play in a field filled with flying opponents with some even having the capability of firing and trying to take you down that way. The only way to survive is to blow yourself up and with a chain reaction get all the other objects on screen to blow up as well. Lives are earned back by picking up the remains when you reappear and it all comes down to detonate yourself at the right place and the right time.
On top of that there's time pressure, a couple of bosses and of course increasingly difficult opponents that keep coming faster and in bigger numbers. The strategical aspect is mostly centered around the time limit and looking carefully how you can create the chain reaction of explosions.
What I immediately noticed was that the gameplay needs a little more time to become clear than with for instance Lumines but sadly enough doesn't offer the same level of addiction and variation. A couple of different modes including the old Every Extend don't resolve this and also the multiplayer is a bit too thin to guarantee long playing sessions.
More interesting are the graphics which don't only look very original but also give the necessary variation. Each level you get a different background (sometimes flat, sometimes 3D) and the things you need to blow up are each time portrayed completely different. There's fireflies, stars, skulls, triangles, UFO-like objects and so on. The bosses have an equally inspired design, just like the sound that will appeal especially to lovers of more alternative electronic music.
Maybe a pretty short review, but the conclusion was quickly made. Just like with Lumines and Meteos, Q Entertainment succeeds to make a very original-looking and playing game with Every Extend Extra but unfortunately the content is just a bit less addictive and interesting than in the real top puzzlers. Only for those that are really into such games or love experimental stuff like Rez.
