The collection rage is of unimaginable size these times. Just about every supermarket has its own sticker deal with accompanying book while others try to lure people in with gogos, smurfs or marbles. Once at the exit you need to watch out for housewives with begging kids as they're ready to stop your cart in exchange for their "fix". "Fuck that" I think then, I start running, hit a kid or two in the process and run as fast as I can towards my car. Mission accomplished... I've got my hands on that one missing card!
Last year EA already arrived with a large expansion pack for FIFA 10 called Ultimate Team and also this year they're planning to get some DLC out. Ultimate Team is a new mode within the game with seperate competitions and tournaments. You can also put together your team to your own liking, need to keep an eye on your players' contracts and attributes. Not much new you might think...What's special about this expansion isn't what you can do, but rather how you do it. Each step you take in putting together your dream team is done by means of playing cards. You'll have to hire a manager, choose a stadium, follow up on the players' contracts and take care of injuries, all through a card game.
The card decks are divided into three groups: bronze, silver and gold. At the start you can only afford the first ones in which you find lower value ones to put together your start team. These contain mostly mediocre players, small stadiums, unknown shirts and more. As you win more games and tournaments you get coins which can be exchanged for more valuable cards.
The amount of coins you get depends on a number of things: the amount of goals you score or get, shots at target, percentage ball possession, number of faults, etc. Luckily they come in quite fast which makes you quickly get a bronze deck of 500 coins (win one game) but if you want to get the more valuable ones, like a silver at 2500 coins or a gold pack for 5000 coins, you'll have to save a bit longer. For the rich and lazy amongst us there's also a possibility to buy the decks. A bronze package costs €0.25, silver is €0,49 and gold will set you back €0,99.
With FIFA 10 Ultimate Team you're ten euros poorer, but plenty of hours of gameplay richer. This DLC shows another side of FIFA where leading your team is the main focus. From manager and players to sponsors and shirts, you need to take everything into account. If you're a big fan of FIFA 10 then this expansion is certainly worth checking out. If you're not really into soccer games, then you probably shouldn't even have read this review :)
