This is the Mekka for the true soccer freaks! Every team (up to second class) from each country (where an official competition is running) and each player from those teams. You can also see that Sega has done their job and even analysed every player as they've sent out scouts for each country to check and score them. That way the realism of this game got upped another step.
So you can take the lead over your favorite team and have the ability to buy players, change tactics, plan trainings and coach your team during a game. You can also caoch reserves and -19 teams, but I'll already tell you; if you're interested in this, be sure you'll be spending A LOT of time on these. I think taking care of one team at a time is already enough, especially when playing this game for the very first time.
It certainly isn't something for people who know little to nothing about soccer. How would you know where to look for good players on the transfer market? And talking about that: you can search by name or check the transfer list. There you'll get to see all players that are currently "free" but if they're on that list, you can be sure their own teams no longer want them. Reasons for that can vary from being too old, too expensive or just too bad for the team. Sometimes a player won't accept a new contract as he wants to move to a better club so you can say that they've got their own "opinion" and a lot depends on how well you present your club.
You can also try to have another team to sell a player but it will cost you a lot of money.
To come back to those trainings, you really have a wide choice. You can have them work out hard, weak or normal. This not only influences their readyness during actual games, but also their endurance. The problem with a heavier training is that there's a bigger possibility for injury and we really don't want that. A good dose and variation in style is not a bad idea.
To take a look at the other management possibilities, you can use the quick menu which replaces the quite unhandy one from the previous Football Managers. By pushing the left bumper key you get the new menu with its different options. You can proceed to the next day, check out your team (and everything that goes with it), request the news of the day,... in short everything you could with the old menus but a lot more simple.
Once you've prepped your team you can start the first games. This, however, is the lesser aspect of the game. You would expect to see a real match in fifa style but nothing is further away from the truth. The camera is really top-down and the only thing you can watch is bolls shuffling after something that's supposed to be a ball. Other possibilities to watch are not present. There's also a textual feature but with each action there's a new ruler while the previous one disappears so it's extremely hard to follow.
Another great thing about this game (and not one you would expect) is the multiplayer. Indeed, the multiplayer! This game has multiplayer!
Here you can take on a team of other players in 2 competitions. First up is the "cup" mode where you have a knock-out system like in the Champions League and then there's the normal form just like any standard competition. Here the same rules apply as in normal soccer seasons and you can earn point by winning matches while based on those points you'll get ranked.
All in all this game is quite interesting when it comes to gameplay although I did have a problem with one thing: you need the manual if you quickly want to understand the controls and that's something I don't like as I more prefer the "plug and play" way of doing things.
Graphically you don't need to expect much except for some bolls that move and some text that changes.
This game is very extensive and that has its pro's and con's. The advantages are that you've got an enormous amount of possibilities and players, the biggest con is that this title isn't quite as accessible for those that know little of soccer or management games.
If you're into this though, this is thé football manager for you!
