Ghost Squad is a so-called "port" of a Sega lightgun arcade game. You know, a game where you need to grab a plastic rifle and in front of your friends get to play the tough hero. No longer is it necessary to go to the Japanese arcades to experience this deep gameplay, thanks to the Wii you can now show just how great you are in this enhanced version of Duck Hunt from your seat.
I was certainly surprisd that after about half an hour of playing I already saw the ending credits pass by. This game therefore needs to be checked with correct assumptions: hardly a big story, little variation in gameplay, shorter than wiener of the guy that once took your girlfriend, and AI as well as freedom can be put as "absent". What you do get is a piece of addictive old-skool shooter fun that bit by bit releases its unlocks and secrets so that you will still be tempted to go through this shooting party a couple of times. In total you get three missions, with each a couple of alternative roads during which you have to get rid of enemies that spawn always at the same places. The necessary variation comes in the form of a couple of slower sniper sequences, a boss here and there, and the mission to defuse a bomb. What makes the game just a bit more interesting is that after each time you complete it, you get a bigger challenge: you get less time and the aiming has to be more precise.
People with a steady hand (or fast fingers) will be rewarded with a couple of new and more powerful weapons, but also crazier stuff like the possibility to replace opponents by babes in bikini. A bit of Japanese madness on two chopsticks so to speak!
The gameplay never gets really deep, but we don't complain. The aiming works good and precise and the immersion is a bit bigger than with a classic controller thanks to the Wiimote. Those that have bought a zapper will be able to use their piece of plastic to register scores as high possible and share them with other Wii-ers.
Ghost Squad is a simple and short game, but succeeds thanks to the sharp controls, its charm and the fact that you never know which fun surprise awaits you, to at least make you go through the levels about a dozen times. Those visiting you will also be easily pursuaded to shoot for half an hour and maybe more when he or she discovers there are top scores to be improved.
