41 Aerosmith songs in the shape of good-old Guitar Hero gameplay is what you get when you pay for this new game. If you like this group and Guitar Hero then this is a must-have. If you have doubts about either of the above then this game will be a lot less interesting for you, especially seeing the in the end quite limited content of the Career mode.
As suggested, the gameplay is the same as with the previous episodes in the series, with that exception that its a bit easier than Guitar Hero III; Hammer-ons are a lot easier and there are also less annoyingly hard solos. We, and many casual fans of the series, applaud however that you to complete Expert you no longer need bleeding fingers for two weeks. Also all multiplayer possibilities are present but again: nothing new under the sun. I did jump up a bit when I found out that there was only 1 "battle" in the single player part, but that's still one too many.
During that same career, the most player part of these games, you only get 31 songs, of which 19 from Aerosmith themselves. The other 12 are performed by other bands who in some way have crossed the path of the rockers or were inspired by them. On top of that you get another 10 to unlock which again are from Aerosmith or one of the side project from Joe Perry. Unfortunately you won't find any real classics in between.
Luckily Aerosmith themselves have a whole slew of top songs with their name on them. ‘Toys in the Attic’, ‘Love in an Elevator’, ‘Walk This Way’ and ‘Draw The Line’ are a couple. However, I was a bit disappointed that for instance ‘Crazy’ and ‘Cryin’ were absent. Strange for what's supposed to be the best the group ever made. The non-Aerosmith numbers are amongst others done by The Cult, The Kings (‘All Day and All of the Night’), Stone Temple Pilots and Lenny Kravitz. I never really managed to get turned on by them though.
I'm starting to sound like a broken record but also the presentation offers little new. Of course you get the band members like Steve Tyler presented in their game-shape (and that's fun) and also the setting got an update. The six playable environments are specially selected as they were important for the career of the group. There's the sports room where they did their first gig and the Orpheum Theatre where they made their big comeback is also present. To give you a better idea about the importance of the locations you get an introduction movie where the band members tell their story but we wouldn't have minded if there would have been a bit more of this.
More important than the images is of course the quality of the music and there's nothing to complain there. Some numbers were re-recorded for the game and you can hear that. Only too bad that we also get some covers but luckily these are only of the non-Aerosmith kind.
You've understood well: you've got a plastic guitar at home and love Aerosmith, then this is a nice suggestion. If you don't like the group or still have to set your first steps in the world of Guitar Hero then you better go for the previous game that offers a lot more songs and a wider selection.
