Guitar Hero: Rocks the 80s is exactly what the title already suggests: an extra after the main concert to please the real fans and have them rocking on their favorite songs just a little longer.
In real life an “encore” doesn’t change anything fundamentally to the stage and that’s also the case here. All menus, locations and attributes are put in a neon-glow (which at first made me think there was something wrong with my scart cable) and also the characters are put in a suiting outfit. You won’t notice any other changes except – of course – for the track list.
And that looks quite uninspired unfortunately. I was told that there were some big hits in there and a couple of songs sang by the real artists, but the overall feeling isn’t really what the average fan will expect from the “best of the 80s”. The advantage on the other hand is that there are a handful of tracks that I had never heard of but were quite fun to play and get to know.
Another plus of the soundtrack is the variation, something that’s refreshing and made me decide that some of these number would be more than welcome in Guitar Hero 3 in order that you don’t have to play that some hard rock or metal all the time. Some examples of the more well-known songs: Round and Round, I Wanna Rock, What I Like About You and Heat of the Moment.
Unfortunately it will stay with about a dozen songs that you’ll either recognise or like, and the rest of the thirty are very weak or at most highly uninspired. Not really something to get warm about or have fun with your friends with, not even with a fluo yellow wig on your head.
As said there are less covers, but they’re still the bulk of the game and therefore it’s good that they were well recorded and done. Especially seeing that the price for this expansion is quite high you can hardly call it a deal.
A less strong list of tracks, less locations and characters and especially no unlockable songs for the hardcore guitar players amongst you, this couldn’t get us warm at all. Add to that the fact that the presentation is just that from Guitar Hero 2 with some paint added and you know that the dozen really good songs won’t be able to save the average score of Rocks the 80s. Only for the true fans or those that are patient enough until the price drops.
PRO
- The same good Guitar Hero gameplay
CON
- but with less songs, less locations, less characters and a less exciting soundtrack
