Halo 2 for Xbox has been without a doubt one of the most succesful games of the last year and will be added to the libraries of console history. Not only did the singleplayer deliver more of the same that we knew from the original, but especially the multiplayer part left a big impression. Just over 6 months after the release, the online fights are still going on through XBox Live, the best proof that Bungie and Microsoft have delivered a digital pearl. To please the hardcore fans, they've now released 9 new maps for more shooter fun in the form of the Halo 2 Multiplayer Map Pack.

If you only play by yourself with Master Chief you can easily let go of this add-on. Only if you really want to see the short and interesting extras on the dvd, this will be worth buying. You get amongst others a movie that shows what happened with a drop ship that was shot down in the beginning of the game in the featurette "Another day at the Beach". Another interesting extra is the movie "Halo 2: Killtacular" where you can see how the maps were created.

For those that want more excellently balanced multiplayer fun, this is a must-have, I can tell you that already. Still, by now, already 4 of the nine maps are available as free download and the other 5 will become free on August 30th. If you've got a lot of patience or a small budget, you can wait a little but if you want to make one of the best games ever even better immediately, this is your chance.

I won't talk about Halo 2 itself anymore, you can read our review for that, and about the multiplayer aspect it suffices to say that the combination of tactical fights, the well-balanced weapons, vehicles and close combat possibilities, the variation in maps and game modes, the perfectioned controls and of course the revolutionary match making system of Halo 2 make is the best online shooter amongst console games.

The 9 new maps offer a combination of small, intense ones and bigger ones where you can work with the many vehicles. The quality also becomes clear due to the fact that they're all useable in all different modes, something that's an achievement in itself. Below a short impression of the new playing fields :

Warlock

Warlock is one of the smaller maps which means you're never far from the action. Next to four little bases, multiple floors and some elevators you'll also find two teleports, something that decreases the time between two enemy encounters even further. Of course also very handy for CTF or to deliver a bomb! A very intense map with grenades, Magnums and a camouflage pick-up.

Containment

Contrary to Warlock, Containment is a very large area with two gigantic bases on both ends. If you're looking for a map to do larger battles, this snowy pearl is your thing. Amo,gst other things, you get a Warthog and a Scorpion and you'll need them if you quickly want to go from one fortress to the other as otherwise it will take you quite some bunnyjumping with that flag. Containment reminded me to one of my favorite from TFC (TeamFortress Classic, ed.) since both bases have a gate that only opens through a button on the front side of the building.

Elongation

Elongation seems to be set in a futuristic version of a DHL factory as you constantly get to see boxes on an automated transport band. This can perfectly be used as train to get you somewhere. There isn't a lot more to say about this map though, except for the fact that it's fun if you like surprises and fights with a lot of cover.

Turf

Turf is without a doubt my favorite as it plays in a surrounding that makes you think on the Earth scenes in Halo 2, also my favorite parts from the singleplayer. Destroyed streets, a big metal gate, a completely worked out building and many barricades are a guarantee for intense close-combat and sniper fun.

Sanctuary

The average in size map Sanctuary offers a surrounding with ruines of old buildings. Between the two easily accessable bases, in the middle of the map, you'll find a building with amongst others things an Energy Sword. Each base has also enough weaponry and a defense turret so you can expect lots of blasting without vehicles.

Relic

Relic is a good addition as it's a big, complete island with lots of space, hills, rocks and trees, to make even the most adventurous people amongst us happy. In the middle of all this there's a large base and you also get a Warthog and a Ghost.

Gemini

Ideal for a game Slayer due to the lack of vehicles and bases. Next to that, this symmetric map delivers a lot of high-tech, a jump-pad and a beautiful view through the balcony.

Terminal

Terminal is also a fun one since you often get confronted with a high speed train that runs through the middle of the map. Unfortunately you can't derail or jump on it but thanks to the Warthogs and Ghosts that are present you can make a mess easily. The train destroyes everything on its path and with all the racing you can cause a little accident on this pretty large map with lots of possibilities.

Backwash

Also one of the better maps is Backwash which plays in a swamp, cloaked in fog. The green ground, high trees and rain make the feeling of this map unique and make you think of the Flood. Most action will take place in the round building in the center of the woods, although there are also two smaller bases at the end. A very intense addition!

Some maps (like Backwash) will look somewhat familiar but that shouldn't spoil the fun. Some new pieces of soundtrack and new objects offer enough renewal to make sure the whole doesn't look like more of the same.

The conclusion is very simple: if you're a fan of Halo 2 multiplayer you just have to buy this if you don't have enough patience till the end of the holidays. If you've got Halo 2 but lack Xbox Live, this is anohter reason to connect your black box on the internet.
