Harvest Moon always was a good catch for virtual farmers. Too bad the formula has been repeated a few times too many lately. Rising Star is eager to create the same game over and over again and Nintendo is fine with it. And so it will be that a once beautiful experience is now overruled by greed and indolence. Will Harvest Moon DS bring any changes?
It's well possible of course. The DS pen is bound to be used for something flashy and fancy, isn't it?
The glorious gameplay this could bring forth! I was expecting something really cool, as you would normally expect from a game with this status. Because crappy games or not, the game has a somehow managed to create a fanbase and through the years actually became a classic.
Well don't even bother thinking about new gameplay. In fact, I was just playing the same game everybody did several years ago on the GBA. It took time to realise this, because in the beginning, Harvest Moon games can be quite entertaining. After a lousy intro with a storyline that smells like a lack of creative input you're free to start your own farm. Don't forget to talk to other people in your little town, because there are definitely some hot mamas waiting for your sweet lovin'. Nothing new to be noticed! But wait fellow farmers, an evil witch has hidden 101 fairies. Your job is to bring those fellows back to the real world, so that they can eventually help you out with your daily work. Not that there's any change you really have to find them, they just come up randomly when time passes by.
Buying seeds, ploughing the ground and watering it, taking care of animals and building silos, it's all possible again in this version of Harvest Moon. Too bad you rarely have to use your DS pen throughout the game. The opportunities could have been endless, and they were just to lazy to do anything. I've almost played the whole game without even using it, because there are special combinations allowing you to completely forget about the pen. Washing and taking care of animals can be compared to Nintendogs.
The biggest problem of Harvest Moon DS is the complete lack of innovation or anything that even comes close to spicing things up. Sure, you can go mining to collect stones and you can upgrade your equipment but who cares, it's boring and stupid. The game as some really big imperfections. It's not possible to see how much money you get for selling a specific herb or vegetable, meaning you will have to choose on good luck what's better and what's not.
What's left to be said? Though the game is very big with a lot of ways to play it, there's not much to say about it. It starts off like a fun game to play and just falls apart like a fat kid tackled by mean fat kids eating vegetables because of the slow progress. If you know the game hasn't got great graphics, has no great music and gameplay that would even need an update 15 years ago, you'll get the point. Too bad...
