Harvest Moon: Tree of Tranquility has been out for ages in the US, but only recently made the step to cross the pond towards Europe. The series is pretty well-known, but this episode is the first to be released for the Wii.

The latter, however, didn't mean that the devs went looking for a new formula. Those that played one of the previous episodes, or are currently checking out FamVille on Facebook, will immediately feel at home. You have to repair the mother tree on the island and this is done by working your land, removing weeds, breed farm animals and of course now and then harvesting crops. This is a game that still works by sitting relaxed in your seat and letting the hours pass by without worrying about whether or not this game is a meaningful passing of time.

Fans of the series will notice that quite a lot of new animals make their appearance, like an ostrich, but the way you feed them and give them something to drink to make them happy doesn't differ from what you're used to. The same also goes for what you can do with the production of these animals and what your fields bring in each season.

Don't let the lack of innovation and excitement hold you back, though. Patience is the only skill you need to have to play this game. This title is really... slow! And on top of that, the start is boring - it depends on your personal taste whether it stays that way - you only get new stuff to do from time to time and it's waiting until you have enough money in order to get things moving and expanding your farm. Luckily you can perform some side-jobs to get some additional income.

What can also be a turn-off is the new Wii controls. These add little to nothing, but make it harder to navigate. Luckily you can go back to a classic controller scheme which makes everything feel like before. The only disadvantage is that you won't be able to play the minigames then. These are enjoyable and you can even ask your friends next to you in the seat to join in. Not that this is very meaningful if you've got some partygames in your collection, but it does offer a certain amount of variation to the otherwise quite monotone gameplay.

Another reason you don't have to take into account for getting this game are the beautiful graphics or great animations. The visuals are very simple but never manage to charm enough to hide the lacking technical skill. Luckily the music is quite alright. Too bad the devs spent less time and money for the voice recordings and sound effects as these are clearly of a less high level than the music score.
The conclusion is simple: this game offers little new for the fans but won't disappoint them either. I can imagine a new generation of FarmVille addicts may want to see whether the genre is fun on the Wii and for them Harvest Moon: Tree of Tranquility may be worthwhile. The lack of innovation, the extremely slow pace and the little appealing presentation make this game one that the rest of the world can easily pass by.
