This has to be the last James Bond game published by Electronic Arts, soon we'll welcome Activision first Bond title. Many fans already look forward to what this publisher will make of it. But before that a great deal of wodka martinis have to be drunk on PSP while saving the world of a secret terroristic organisation which tries to warm up the Cold War.

It's not the Red danger that threatens the world, but the secret organisation Octopus which has agents in both the Blue and the Red camp. More or less following the original movie's plot, you shoot your way through society parties in London, gipsy camps in Turkey and secret bases. Next to a weapon arsenal of pistols, machine guns, bazookas, etc, many gadgets are at your disposal. Among them the Q-Copter, without doubt the the best. This thing works as a UAV which can be detonated next to a unwary enemy. So far nothing new in the Bond genre and certainly not if you already have this game's PS2 version. From Russia With Love on PSP is nothing more than a stripped console game, the same game but without the driving missions.

Does EA nevertheless manage to give us an entertaining game that looks nice but plays nice as well? Strange but true, From Russia with love is much more fun on PSP than on cconsole, although it still has some irritating characteristics. The graphics certainly aren't that bad, but they're inferior to those of Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror. The framrate doesn't change and the atmosphere of the sixties is there. The sound and controls are also allright, although aiming in Bond Focus mode should have been better and the possibility to strafe shouldn't be absent. The game offers enough variation in levels and loading times are limited, but they appear too much, certainly in later stages.

The mission objectives vary from providing covering fire to allied NPCs to killing terrorists while flying with a jetpack through a factory. Especially the latter is more a question of shooting sitting ducks than attacking the enemy like Bond in a long and epic fight after which he escapes with the girl. Extra points are earned by eliminating enemies quickly one after the other, by using mêlee attacks or collecting Bond moves by shooting the right thing at the right moment. You can hear it coming: plenty of variation isn't there and if you do have try something 'new', it is really obvious. The A.I. isn't that good either, often the enemy walks by without noticing you or when they're hit they don't get it immediatly.

Bullets are can be found in abundance, although you can only take a limited ammount of ammunition with you. That ammount can be increased by upgrading your weapon with well-deserved upgrade points, but even then, some ten bullets as a maximum for a machine gun? If you have to attack a secret base, you're better off with tons of armor piercing bullets.
Nevertheless you keep on gaming, because James Bond stays cool and thanks to the many checkpoints you never have to play a level a hundred times. After finishing the missions, they can be played again to increase your score or to play challanges like eliminating a certain ammount of enemies in a certain part of the stage. Multiplayer too increases the replay value.

James Bond: From Russia With Love is not a bad game for PSP. It indulges you in Bond's world and has a predictable but entertaining storyline. There are some disadvantages which sometimes spoil the game, but it won't disturb you that much. The A.I. should have been more challanging and the game could have used some extra levels. In less than an hour you're already flirting with a Russian beauty after which the light goes out and the credits start. Unfortunately the game is inferior to Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror which scores better all the way and eventually offers more than this slightly mutilated port.
