Kirby is back! This little pink ball is going after a band of mice in his second adventure on the DS. Kirby fun or Kirby junk?

12_t2
The story is as follows: Kirby was just trying to put his teeth into a delicious piece of strawberry cake when it gets stolen by some very fast unknown. Our hero cannot let this pass and thus goes after the guilty one to get his cake back before it turns bad.

2_t2
To do this Kirby floats around in different levels, meanwhile collecting treasures that are opened at the end of each of them. There are two kinds of treasure chests: the little ones and the big ones. Each time you find one of the latter, one of the Squeaks (Kirby’s new enemies) will go after you together with a band of terrorist mice. Their mission objective is to steal the treasure by hurting Kirby or by taking it before the pink guy even gets to it.

If they manage to do this, they head for their hideout. Kirby can win the treasure back by hitting the Squeak before it reaches its home base or by defeating all enemies in it. Although these enemies want the big treasures, they don’t mind taking along the little ones too if Kirby drops them because he gets hit too many times.

Other opponents are fairly easy to beat thanks to Kirby’s sucking power. That way you can suck up the annoying little pests, swallow them and maybe even take over their powers. Kirby’s copy powers in ‘Mouse Attack’ are quite elaborate. While Kirby uses a copied power, his sucking attacks change into those that go with the copied ability. Sometimes you need a specific ability to get to hidden treasures.

Kirby gets these powers by swallowing enemies, but also by collecting bubble objects. In these little soap bells there are abilities or objects. If Kirby catches or swallows them, they get visible in his belly on the touchscreen. Kirby has room for five bubbles. Treasures are also stored in there, so when there is no more place for new things, you will have to sacrifice something by dragging it out of the screen. If touched with the stylus the objects can refill Kirby’s life meter or give him (temporary) invincibility.

However, often you need to combine a few objects to get something useful out of it, like an extra life. Bubble objects are combined by dragging them towards each other with the stylus. That way abilities can be combined too. The touchscreen is not used for anything more in the main game.

When Kirby safely completes a level, you can gain a bonus (an extra life, a refill) by pressing the right button at the appropriate time, which fires Kirby from a cannon towards the desired bonus. After this Kirby does a little dance and the treasures are opened. They contain another bonus or a collection item, like a song from the soundtrack. All those extras can be found in the treasure room.

Next to the main game there are three mini games that are available in multiplayer too. Those three are: Speedy TeaTime, Smash Ride and Treasure Shot. In Speedy TeaTime the strawberry cakes have to be touched with the stylus so that Kirby can eat them. Touching the screen before the cakes appear or eating bomb cake is not a good idea.

In Smash Ride Kirby has to smash his opponents from a platform. A kind of ramming attack is performed when draagin the stylus over the screen. Unfortunately this does not work as it should. Treasure Shot is about collecting as many desserts as possible by shooting bullets at them when they appear out of their treasure chests. This is done too by dragging the stylus, but with that game it does work and much better than in Smash Ride.

Kirby Mouse Attack delivers sharp and clear images, accompanied by happy tunes. In other words: standard Kirby (and Nintendo) graphics and sound.

Kirby Mouse Attack means old-skool Kirby fun. For those of you who nostalgically think back of the old Nintendo consoles.

PRO

  • Old-skool Kirby fun
  • Nostalgia
  • Mini games

CON

  • Touchscreen used too few in main game
  • Enemies too easy to beat
