Pilaging, looting, raping and all in the name of God? Life of a crusader must have been a nice one... In Knights of the Temple 2 by Playlogic and Cauldron you take on the role of Paul de Raque, a tough, righteous but weary crusader. Many years ago he defeated the evil Lord Bishop and in this second part of the series his quest takes him to the century-old libraries in an ancient monastery where he finds out about a diabolical prophecy. Fortunately he also finds a way to stop this terrible thing from ever happening. His search leads him past three islands where he has to find three ancient artefacts that will help him close the Hellgates.

Knights of the Temple 2 is an adventure pur sang in which linear action plays a central role. The game consists of three large cities and a few small islands. Don't think to much of those major cities though, because they all have about ten streets tops. The puzzles that make up Knights of the Temple 2 can hardly be called challenging. One of the more difficult ones was the one where the solution could be found on the table next to it. Aside from those rare brain 'teasers' the game is mostly limited to pulling some levers to open some doors. The thick foliage on the other islands always guides you in one or two directions so don't expect much freedom there either.

The lack of quests is another reason for grief. Few of the npcs in the cities will ask you to do something for them. This is mostly rewarded with some character points (are you good or evil? This will probably have an effect on the final outcome of the game), a weapon, some coin or experience points that you can spend on several abilities and combo attacks. The quests are just plain easy and most of them even tell you where to look for the person or quest item. Aside from the side quests you have of course the main quest in which Paul will have to roam the three cities in search of the Eye, the Rune and the Weapon; three powerful artefacts that will put a stop to the evil plans of the enemy. Furthermore, the game does a sub par job of sucking you right into the experience. For instance, the game uses practically no voice acting. Aside from the greetings when you talk to someone, you will not here another single spoken word. The quest options are completely based on textual choices.

And the stream of mediocre comments isn't at an end yet. The graphics are far from excellent. Graphics that would have gotten average reviews two or three years ago, cannot compete in today's market. The occasional use of sound effects is hardly worth mentioning.

And this leads me to Playlogic's biggest mistake, the mother of all errors, the catastrophic misstep numero uno. We pride ourselves in being able to complete each and every game that comes across our desk, however, the game shattered my reputation like a rampant elephant would shatter glass in a house of mirrors. It was impossible to finish this game. Now, before you all come marching through the editor-in-chief's small office door, please allow me to explain. One of the three main quest items, the Sword, was located somewhere on an island somewhere. So after I had meticulously slashed my way through hordes and hordes of enemies, I finally got ready to get off the island in the assumption there wasn't anything there. However, when going through the main entrance to the hollow mountain range, the entrance collapses, making it impossible to ever set foot inside the circle of rocks ever again, thus, keeping me from getting the Sword, thus withholding me from ever finishing the game. I therefore send my heartfelt thanks to the developers over at Playlogic for making me go through this new experience...

Knights of the Temple is best to be left untouched if you're looking for a new game experience. If you are one of those die hard adventure fans and you're interested in the daring life of the crusader, you might consider purchasing this title. And hope you'll be able to see the credits roll off your screen...
