The previous LMA Manager (2006) was certainly one of the more fun titles in its genre, but it did have a couple of problems that spoiled the fun. Now the new season is here and of course we get this new LMA Manager 2007. But does this new offspring bring enough innovation to be called a new game?
I can give a quick answer to that question and it goes as follows: "NO". There are hardly any innovations and not even the menus or pictures or backgrounds have changed. Also on management-level, and actually the rest of the game, there's nothing new to be found. Indeed, ab-so-lu-te-ly nothing!
Although LMA Manager 2006 in general was a good game and I can't completely blame Codemasters for taking certain elements along in this title, I find what they've done a bit over the top. There were enough parts that could use some upgrades and unfortunately these haven't arrived. A perfect example is the layout and shape of the in-game menu. It has a ton of icons that say very little about what they o. You only get text references from the moment you navigate to that specific icon and it's quite a screw up that you need to go looking for the item you want.
The game isn't completely negative though. The possibilities you have as manager are still very extensive and for the fans of the genre this does seem to be a piece of heaven. Planning trainings, doing transfers, rebuilding a stadium, ... name it! Since the game is so extensive also some help is present to control everything. You can hire personnel that can help you by taking over several of your tasks. That way the newer players can easily get started with getting to know the game since you can activate LMA Manager piece by piece.
Improved are the 3D games (which look a LOT better than in version 2006) and the downloading of current player lists. Apparently the people at Codemasters did find it necessary to update the graphics a bit as they're going to a next-gen console and I must say they succeeded pretty well. Although certain players look a lot like each other, they're all relatively well-done. You won't see triangle feet of square hands...
The other new features is - as said - the downloading of existing rosters and that way you can adjust your team to as it is in reality now. After each transfer period, Codemasters will make a new list available with of course all transfers that have happened present.
Graphically the game did get some progress but don't be fooled, it remains to that. Unfortunately also the audio samples got the same treatment... not now and not improved.
You can easily say that except for the graphics and the transfer lists there's nothing new to be found in this game which is a sad thing. Innovation is and remains necessary for a game to survive. This time they certainly didn't manage to add truly interesting elements to LMA Manager. Conclusion: disappointing, you can just as easily keep playing LMA Manager 2006 and save your money for the 2008 edition.
