Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects starts promising... everything looks stylish and tight. The promise to go to work with a bunch of superheroes ((Wolverine, Magneto, Spider Man, Venom, Daredevil, etc.) in one game, including online options and a story mode, immediately got me interested. I love comics, beautiful design and creative characters and it was with some excitement that I started on this review.

But my excitement disappeared as quickly as it arrived. As fun as the packaging and the features look at first sight, so contentless the whole is after a couple of minutes of playing. The story itself turns around an invasion of aliens, an evil professor and his six assistants, some sort of failed experiments (the "Imperfects" from the title, you dig?) that have superhuman powers. It all comes down to this: you have to fight!

After about two and a halve minutes you'll be fed up with the fighting; certainly concerning the normal opponents. In the singleplayer campaign (which you need to complete to unlock extra characters, trading cards, pieces of comics and some videos) you constantly get the same locations, opponents and gameplay on your dish. Button bashing will be your part and after having finished this game, your mammy will always call you when she needs some potato mushing. On top of that the cannon fodder is too easy to beat or they can give too much damage (the flying units) making the while look very unbalanced and little challenging.

More fun is the fact of course that in the story you can change heroes and also the boss fights against the Imperfects are more than enjoyable. But remember: there's only six of these guys. Also good are the superpowers but that's the least you could expect. On one side it's also cool that you can pick up a lot of objects and throw them at your opponents (something they love doing as well) but on the other side it's too roughly made so that you often miss or kill yourself with a bad throw of an exploding car wreck.

For the rest of the time you'll be busy struggling with the camera, the interface and HUD which all stand in the way more than adding to a satisfying gaming experience. Also the interaction of the surroundings couldn't convince me and actually you'll constantly see things that ruin the game for people looking for more than "just a game". The combat system doesn't feel bad, but gets little opportunity to proove itself due to the other shortcomings.

Luckily you can also kick ass online, something that immediately feels better since you can go head to head with human opponents. Also the necessary stats and leaderboards are present so this addition can certainly be seen as a positive point.

Another plus, and for me personally the strongest aspect of the game, are the characters. These look very authentic, can enjoy a good design and move in a very nice way. If you're fan of the comics you'll no doubt have a lot of fun with this. Too bad that the surroundings are of an equal level. The menus then are an example of how you can create a certain atmosphere from start to end. The sound is very average and doesn't manage to impress, nor the music nor the effects. This isn't necessarily bad, but you can't really point it as a strong point of the game.

I can't completely bash Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects and the game doesn't deserve such a treatment either. The gamer who isn't looking for depth or the fan who's just looking for a way to spend some time with his favorite heroes will find some nice moments with this game, and for the latter there's also a ton of unlockable content present. Who is looking for more than a simple fighting game, with only an online part that's a bit better than average, we would recommend other titles.

PRO

  • Fantastic characters (graphics, super powers, ..)
  • Fun unlockables
  • Online multiplayer is great add-on

CON

  • Very weak singleplayer
  • Gameplay not good enough
  • Poor level design
