Everyone has at some point played Monopoly. It's a pleasant game to play with your friends and to get away from your computer or TV from time to time. But also that changes as Monopoly is now available for the PS3. Whether your controller can replace the dice you can read below.

Who's the bank? is a question most games of Monopoly start with. Sometime this results in hefty discussions and some even go over dead bodies to be the bank. He who gets this role has to handle the money and can cheat or check whether anyone else is cheating. This is certainly something you miss in the digital version as nobody gets to be the bank. You automatically get your cash and it's always the correct amount. No more arguing but also tucking away bills or trying to cheat is no longer an option, something that does take away some of the fun.

The regular game of Monopoly is known well enough and doesn't need any explanation. Before you start a game you can choose from different boards. It's a change to play Monopoly on a chocolate cake but doesn't alter the basics. The dice are replaced by the controller and if you play with multiple players on one console the controller needs to be passed on unless you play with multiple controllers. This does manage to bring back the atmosphere of dice back and playing with friends remains the most fun part of this game. Sadly enough there's no online multiplayer and despite the possibility to play against the computer it does remain a family game. And as that title says: there's a lot less fun without family or friends around.

Next to the standard game you also get the Richest Edition. This is for if you haven't got enough time for a full game or want to be done in half an hour. The amount of ground you get depends on the eyes on the dice. If you get a card that's already taken you have to pay. To determine who gets to choose between dice first you have to finish a minigame but these are quite boring: drive through obstacles with a car, drag money to a bag, fill a sock with packages... a game mode you won't often play.
Monopoly does its best to be a fun game but even the many boards can't make a real board game of this digital version. You lack the atmosphere of the discussions and also the absence of an online part is unfortunate. The real board game easily rises above this digital version with head and shoulders.

PRO

  • Many playing boards

CON

  • No online
  • No cheating
  • Minigames

People that cheat are crap anyways. You probably glitch as well. Just enjoy the game for what it is worth. Respect the programmers....
