After I finally managed to update my debug setup to version 2.71 I finally could start up Moto GP for the PSP. Although the series never shined in anything on the home console, it did manage to become quite popular. After all, it wasn't a bad game and both the sim lover and the casual gamer always found something that appealed to them. Is Moto GP for the handheld different from any of the other racing games available or just a racer on two wheels? Let's find out...
You can choose between Arcade, Season, Time Trials and an ad hoc multiplayer mode. In all modes there are quite some options to tune your bike to your preference; it isn't Gran Turismo but does make a difference. Once the tracks and bikes have been chosen you start and the real work begins.
Also here an enervating high engine sound starts to hurt the ears while you're driving through quite dull surroundings. The track itself, however, is far from boring as you'll have your hands full with the corners to take. The controls even look very realistic on the PSP and you constantly have the urge to see your handheld as a steering wheel and turn and wiggle when taking a corner. The difficulty degree is challenging enough but after a while you know the tracks which makes the game a lot easier; just accellerate in a corner when overtaking an opponent and you've again gotten one place closer to the podium.
And that's immediately the biggest problem with Moto GP: although the corners differ from track to track, they all do look a lot alike: a bit more asphalt and some seats on the side and that's about it. No wonder that the framerate is at a constant high as there isn't too much action to see on your screen. And that's a pitty as graphically Moto GP isn't the worst title on the PSP. Everything is nicely worked out and the animations of falling bikers is fluid and convincing. And I can know as I've seen a biker fly over his steering wheel and play as broom for the pavement in the real world!
Well. There isn't much to say about this racing game. It all looks and plays nice but that's about it. The boring surroundings ruin the fun after some time while the sound will be working on your nerves a lot faster. Conclusion: it isn't a bad title but there are better and more fun games on the PSP.
