The first MySims Kingdom on the Nintendo Wii came up as a surprise. It looked different than other games from the Sims series and it changed some parts of the gameplay as well. A wise choice, because the graphical style and the implementation of some new gameplay ideas worked surprisingly well for the Wii. MySims Kingdom is once again an enjoyable game with a few shortcomings.
To start, the interaction between different Sims is a bit less deep than you could imagine for a Sims game. So just don't expect an abundance of possibilities or social skills, as it's always pretty obvious which interaction works best when trying to achieve your goals. The possibilities of creating your Sim or new houses are also pretty standard making this game very accessible but lacking in depth. Your task is to help Sims with their problems and to become friends with as many Sims as possible. The game follows a story about a kingdom that has seen better days. To polish your kingdom up, you will have to undergo an exam, and afterwards you'll be able to use magic in order to create objects. To create these objects, you will have to collect different artifacts from all kinds of sources. EA takes elements from games as Harvest Moon and Animal Crossing, and combines these references with the basic Sims gameplay. So you'll be going to cut trees and collect apples or search for minerals with your pickaxe. More artifacts equals more objects to own and you'll need those to shape up your kingdom. You'll start with small simple houses with a modest interior, but when the game continues, you'll be able to look at some more luxurious offers.
That sums up pretty much everything gameplay like, because although MySims Kingdom is a pretty fun offering, it embodies a very simple gameplay. Of course, this is one of these games you play for half an hour each day, just to relax a bit. Don't think, just play and laugh with the comical Sims EA presents you. It's a pity the camera isn't always cooperating, making some of your efforts more complicated than they should be. Oh well, at least you can control your own camera, not like that other EA game Littlest Pet Shop, which we all agree is rubbish.
Your kingdom exists out of different environments, offering some much needed variation. You'll be visiting western worlds among others, where you'll be dealing with the problems of a local pizza cook and a thief who steals all the cooking materials. Your task is to locate the thief and help the cook get his dinner ready. The game mostly exists out of these simple tasks that you have to work with to aid the Sims from your kingdom. To do so, you'll have build a fair share of things, but because the menus are relatively easy to understand, this will be child's play from the beginning.
To fully appreciate MySims Kingdom, you'll have to quit playing after half an hour, just like Animal Crossing is best consumed in little portions. You'll be searching for wood, apples, minerals or other objects for most of the game, and yes, this does wear out after a couple of times. Luckily, there are also a lot of different things you can do besides following the story. If you feel like it, you can go fishing and collect all the fishes in the kingdom. Graphics and sound? All very simple and clean as expected. The Sims still talk in their own silly way and most of the texts are funny.
MySims Kingdom is another proof that games intended for younger audiences can still be fun to play. It's nothing new or fancy, and the gameplay lacks real depth but this is a game you can blindly buy for your children if they like comical Sims and basic simple gameplay.
