When we take a quick look at the Sims franchise you'll notice it's mostly the two computergames The Sims and The Sims 2 (including successors) that made a stur in the gaming world. Two innovative, beautifully made, original games that got the success they deserved. Look further and you'll mostly see spin-offs that try to earn some cash on the back of the popularity of the mumbo-jumbo speaking pseudo-people.
Good example of that, the MySims games that were a lot simpler to really appeal to the most unexperienced gamers amongst us. With MySims Party EA now takes the last, logical step: bring the entry level series to the most accessible genre: mini-games, on the Wii.You get everything you expect from such compilations like the possibility to make your own Sim (usually the most fun part if you ask me) and of course tons of games (fifty to be exact) to play, including some sort of Trophies with which you can show off in the village you start. Also you can earn stuff to decorate your house, adjust or upgrade your Sim, or make the town a little more beautiful. Of course this still is The Sims and customisation is part of that, no?
The mini-games themselves are very simple to control, or what did you expect. Even a round of Raving Rabbids seems a doctorate compared to this "accessibility", eventhough many comparable games are present and this game constantly reminds us of Rayman or Mario Party.Pushing one button or shaking with the remote are usually everything you need to do. In principle not a problem (think of WarioWare) but there's no originality to be found. Only rythm games, something to catch or throw, scraping an ice cream cone, waterin a flower, making or putting something together, you know the drill! Only people not old enough to read this review (or maybe those too drunk) will really have fun with the gameplay. If of course they're forgiving enough to dismiss the badly registering controls.
You can choose to play the mini-games separately or opt for a festival with a predetermined selection of them. As with all similar games you can get going with up to four players, if you sit in the same sofa that is as there are no online possibilities. What we did appreciate were the Leaderboards that keep track of the top scores on an international level. That way some more... "challenge" remains for the more hardcore gamers.
In short yet another mini-game compilation for the Wii, which offers little new when it comes to gameplay. The extra adjustability options (the city, your house, your Sim) are fun but can't compensate for the boring and sometimes even badly playable games. Please don't buy this if you've got something similar already and didn't like it. And no, your kids won't find it very good either! Better luck next time.
