Outpost Kaloki X is an XBox Live Arcade game for which you'll need an Xbox360. For the mere sum of 800 points (to be bought with your credit card) you can download this game to your memory card or harddisk. In exchange you get some sort of tycoon game that plays in space and will appeal mostly to the strategy lovers amongst yourselves.
At first sight it looks a very simple game but soon you find out that beneath the funny looks and the comedy there's a lot more to it. The idea is that you enhance your space station. At the start you get only a couple of credits and some kind of central structure on which you can attach all sorts of modules.
You'll quickly notice that the most important aspect for the gameplay is getting in a constant cash flow. After all, you need the money to buy new expansions, get repairs done, maintenance and of course electricity plants. Expansion vary from research centers, parks, newsletter booths and lemonade booths to big nature hotels, arcade halls and space telescopes.
Money can be earned amongst other things by placing a lemonade booth or a hotel. Visitors pay for a service and you can get the credits which you need to use on repairs or to get ingredients for your bar with healthy potions. Here it quickly surfaces that the game is deeper than you would think: not only do you require swift reactions, you can check each expansion and change settings like the amount of power generated by a plant, the quality of service of a hotel, the types of games in an arcade, how good (and expensive) the ingredients of your drinks are and how much you want to charge your customers.
Many of the settings will also exhaust your construction faster or slower which means you constantly need to se whether there aren't small clouds of smoke escaping. These result in you having to dispatch a repair team or that your expansion looses attraction (bad for income) and secondly also could completely explode by neglection.
With 50 different kinds of buildings and extras like reactions from visitors (handy to know what to build), hostile aliens and space storms there's plenty of variation. You also get that with the different possibilities. The most fun are the story modes amongst which there are "Adventure" and "War". Although the stories itself are quite thin, they do add a funny red line to the modes and also the objectives are quite fun. Despite the many variations on "earn this amount of money" or "build this expansion" you won't easily get a déjà-vu feeling. Expect a good challenge that won't just test your brain cells, but also your management skills and your handyness with the controls.
When you've finished the two storylines you can get additional fun from the scenarios and of course the "free mode" in which you can roam around a lot. I also would like to add that the graphics are quite alright for such a game, and that they support the humouristic approach, just like the sound and music, which is simple but refreshing.
For downpoints we can make some remarks on the way objectives are given (you always have to search for them yourself), the lack of true multiplayer capabilities online, and the sober finishing. That, however, is searching for small imperfections as the game is really well-made.
Outpost Kaloki X is a more than decent strategy game that offers enough content to please every lover of management games. The interface is good, the gameplay simple but surprisingly deep, the missions and objectives are varied and also with the finishing there's nothing really wrong. Don't get fooled by the funny and crazy looks of the game, it does offer a solid challenge that will keep everyone occupied for quite some time. For the price you need to pay, this is something you can't let go!
