Overlord is everywhere these days. There's Overlord 2 for the main consoles and PC, Overlord: Dark Legend for the Wii and now also Overlord Minions for the Nintendo DS. What we have to credit the devs for is that they're developing a different title for each console, one created especially to benefit from the strong points of the platform in question.

On the DS this means that Minions focuses on the little buggers, four of them, instead of the fierce Sauron look-a-like that we know from the big brothers. Due to that decision we get a nice mixture of solving puzzles and problems, and the action we know from the Overlord games. This of course added with that sweet sauce of being able to be bad and being rewarded for it.

Although you only have four Minions this time, they come with different powers and possibilities, just as in all other Overlord games. You'll have to order them precisely and well and have them working together according to their specialisation to guide them through the many puzzles and assignments. Those that aren't too fond of puzzling will be happy to hear that you regularly get to use the stylus for some decent hack&slash work. Your team consists out of Giblet who can fight well and doesn't care much about the weather, Zap who's fond of water and can heal, Stench who loves the better Sam Fisher work and finally there's Blaze who gets all excited by fire and the accompanying explosions.

The difficulty degree is set well. Through the six levels, each with multiple sub parts, you slowly but steadily get more challenging puzzles and missions that ask more and more from your little grey cells as well as your multitasking skills. Unfortunately it's more determined by the controls that by the level design. What gets noticed most is that the minions can hardly do anything by themselves, you'll have to guide them completely with the stylus to their destination. If you leave them alone for five seconds they tend to get stuck in the decor.

Also giving orders like attacking of opponents, or throwing things to upcoming danger, could be done better. Strange that the makers have so much trouble with this as the DS is normally perfect for such work. This doesn't only make solving puzzles frustrating but also fighting becomes clumsy. Luckily the boss fights somewhat make up for that.
Overlord Minions is all but a bad game. It looks good, the gameplay is enjoyable for a couple of hours and there's a good balance between puzzling and action. Too bad the controls tend to spoil the party a bit, but people (and I'm thinking mostly about kids) that have a decent amount of patience and don't mind some repetition will find what they're looking for here. Moms also shouldn't worry about the monsters: everything remains very friendly and fun!

PRO

  • fun and original combination betweeen puzzles and action
  • Atmosphere and graphics

CON

  • Controls not good enough
  • Fighting could be more fun and becomes repetitive
