Next to the Puzzle Pack, Sony has filled a second UMD with PSN games for people who don't own a PS3 or the possibility to go online with their console. Just as in that first pack you get three different games in this Power Pack to enjoy on train, tram or bus. Or toilet.
The first game on this disc is Beats which mostly reminded me of the ingeniously charming Patapon and the indie-game Audiosurf, especially due to the gameplay mechanics. Just as with Audiosurf you play with your own MP3s which in this case are located on your PSP. The difference is that you need to push buttons at the tone of the music as they are shown on the screen to score points. The charm lays in the diversity and flexibility of the soundtrack (which you assemble yourself). Also there's some sort of editor (Jam Mode) with which you can record your own tracks and then share them with other PSP gamers.Syphon Filter: Combat Ops is the second game and the strange duck in the pond. You can only play it online and that's quite strange in such a pack that in my opinion is more targeted towards the more casual gamer. You can play the shooter to sit together with a friend and his PSP or go online. Remarkable is that here you can again create and share your own levels if you've got some patience. Veterans of the series will like this online game but don't expect anything revolutionary or innovative. The biggest problem will be that you'll need to find a friend to join you as online there are hardly any session to be found. Quite a downpoint.
The last and probably most well-known addition to the pack is fl0w. Most amongst you will have seen a screenshot of the game or heard about how it's set up. You get to control your being in a neon-like water environment where you need to eat other organisms. The more you eat and the bigger the enemies you devour, the bigger and different you become. Nice is that the deeper you swim the stronger the other beings get so that you literally will have to go catch a breath higher up in the level. Most of the appeal of the game was in the visual style, something that's still present on the PSP screen, but does come to justice more on a FullHD Plasma screen. In short, a hypnotising game with the necessary innovation, beautiful images and enchanting soundtrack. Ideal to relax with on the train.
In the end this pack offers less value than the Puzzle Pack and that's solely due to the addition of Combat Ops that can only be played online or in multiplayer. If you want to discover what fl0w exactly is or just want to kill some time with Beats and your own MP3s then this game won't be a bad acquisition.
PRO
- fl0w and Beats are two relaxing and innovative games
CON
- Combat Ops is MP only
