Making a good game is an accomplishment, but making a good sequel is often an even harder task. Patapon is often named alongside LocoRoco and brought something new to the PSP. The game was mostly original and the Patapons managed to appeal to just about everyone. Nothing has changed to the concept here: you're still the god of the Patapons and need to guide them by rythmically pushing buttons on your PSP and as such hitting a drum. This really gives you the feeling of control over your army but some more variation wouldn't have hurt.
Next to what Patapon has, this sequel brings some new things. Heroes are now present and in most missions at least one is available in your army. You can dedicate a certain class to him which results in a special attack. If you're in the fever condition and have perfect timing, this move will be performed. One of these is some sort of shield that protects your Patapon against a hostile attack. To be honest this shield may make it a bit too easy to finish a mission. The missions take you through different areas where weather conditions have their influence. Wind will make your arrows go further while snow will make you freeze to the ground. There are different Patapons with specific properties like better resistance to fire. These are received by going to some sort of evolution tree and buying an upgrade with some items. At first it isn't quite clear what best to go for resulting that it doesn't really influence the game.
In the missions you always have to get past an obstacle like monsters or buildings. Defeating larger enemies takes a bit longer and after a while becomes boring. Each time you let your army attack with the same buttons and they'll shout the same things. That's why it's more fun in Patapon 2 to play a couple of levels now and then instead of hours after each other.
Just like these different types of Patapons also the multiplayer part is now. However, this is only ad hoc or together with AI-controlled Patapons. The idea is to guide an egg with four heroes past certain enemies within a certain time. If you succeed in this, a reward is received. The multiplayer isn't a real addition as you do pretty much the same thing as in single player except for the fact that you're just one Patapon and don't notice you're playing with others.
Patapon 2 builds further on Patapon and adds some small innovations. Unfortunately these don't really bring added value. Those that already have the first title will do best to play that one again. For newcomers Patapon 2 is a fun game but you'll often stop after a couple of levels to continue later on.
