Perfect Dark was the spiritual successor to Goldeneye and also the game that set the standard for console shooters in the past. Rare at the time was ambitious and released a game that was far ahead of its time. The Nintendo64 with accompanying expansion pack couldn't manage it and was heavily plagued by the bad framerate. Now, 10 years later, Rare re-releases the shooter on XBLA and as it was supposed to play.
Those that played the original will relive it all again with a smile on their face. For younger gamers this will all be new though and will set a good reference to see how first person shooters have evolved. And if they don't bother with the bad voice acting, non-moving mouths, weird spastic movement, square heads and the ever-repeated textures they might even discover a pleasant game. The game offers a lot more than other XBLA titles at the same price. There are 17 missions that can be played on several difficulty degrees and the more difficult the more goals you need to achieve and the tougher the opposition becomes. If you choose the lowest difficulty then there's of course little opposition and you'll rush through the levels with a speedrun. Your score can easily be compared with that of others through the built-in leaderboards and those that are in for a challenge will choose for Special or Perfect Agent which results in plenty of fighting to reach the top of the boards.
The storyline can be played in co-op or in opposite teams. Here one players takes on the role of Joanna Dark while the other controls the hostiles. Joanna of course only has one life while the other keeps coming back as different characters. The mode offers tons of fun and can be played locally as well as online with up to 4 players.
Those that prefer classic multiplayer can get going with the completely adjustable Combat Simulator which again can be played locally or online. If you don't have friends with a copy of the game then you can load one of the 16 multiplayer maps with four hostile bots which come in different shapes and personalities, going from someone who prefers nothing more than collecting all 43 guns to someone who likes a fist fight above all.
The biggest problem with the game are the controls. Aiming is very difficult and there's no possibility to be very precise at the head or knee of an enemy. The problem surfaces especially when using a sniper rifle. For quick non-zoomed-in work everything works as it should, and we get swift duels which are in big contrast to the sniping. Next to the classic method also two other controller setups are present, Spartan for the Halo fans and Duty Calls for the ... Call of Duty fans. Remember that there's no possibility to jump in this game. It may feel awkward for the first fifteen minutes, but you get used to it pretty fast.
Perfect Dark is the perfect reincarnation of the clasic. It not only looks a bit sharper but also plays faster. Those that already checked it out ten years ago will no doubt have fun with it and have no problem what so ever to give 800 Microsoft Point for it. Whether newcomers will feel like playing it is another thing. Compared to titles from now there are many shortcomings that you just can't ignore. If you ask us: only for the fans
