Who didn’t dream as a young kid to be a supercop? Just deal with the criminals the hard way and ignore all rules, since rules are meant to be broken. Sadly reality is different, but luckily we still have games like Pursuit Force on the PSP. Extreme Justice is the second part and would be a significant improvement over its predecessor. Let us see if they learned from their mistakes.

Let us discuss one of the biggest improvements, the control over your vehicle. No longer you will try to keep it together as some maniac, but instead you can bring your full attention towards the criminals and shoot them one by one. The controls you use are still the same as in the first game and you’ll familarize yourself with them really quickly.

Another negative point was the high difficulty setting of the game. In this point they listened to their fans, but the solution isn’t perfect. You can choose out of 3 difficulty settings, and at the start these work, but when you get further in the game you’ll get frustrated even at the lowest difficulty setting. The thought of throwing your PSP through mid air does come up then.

On the department of graphics the game is one of the better ones on the PSP. The vehicles and characters are sharp and have a cartoon look. The moves of your character, for example when he jumps on another vehicle are quite fluid and these scenes give you an adrenaline rush just by watching it, simply because it looks awesome. Another nice addition is that you’re no longer alone when you shoot, run or drive. Frequently you’ll receive backup from other Pursuit Force team members and they’ll help you against your enemies in different ways. As I mentioned 2 sentences ago, you will also play on foot. This is to be honest a very irritating part, simply because the controls aren’t made for it. You’ll be glad to jump in another vehicle after an irritating walking part.

During the fighting you will also receive extra power. You can collect these by shooting the bad guys. When you have enough of it you can use it to heal or repair yourself and the vehicle. Another use is to go into slowmotion and jump to a enemy vehicle. You can then shoot the occupants in mid air. You’ll lose power when you ram a civilian vehicle or shoot them by accident. After a while the hijacking of enemy vehicles does become repetitive. Because you have to follow a strict path and need to kill every enemy on your way, the game loses a lot of it’s freedom.

In the previous paragraph i said you’ll have backup from several other persons. This of course means that the story has also become more important in this game. Now with a game like this the story has a lot of stereotypes. You have another police team called Viper Squad who aren’t as good as they let out to be and a conspiracy against the United States of America and it’s president. Now this would’ve been nice if it wasn’t for the awful voice overs, especially from your boss. The last thing I want to hear when been in an important gun fight or getting crushed under a bus is he telling me how his grandmother is faster then me or I’m fired for getting my ass killed. Luckily the sound effects and background music are more then decent enough.

To increase the replay value of the game, they added several new options for people that can’t do multiplayer. As a first new mode you have Bounty Mode. This is a mode where the difficulty increases after each session. Another new mode is the Challenge Mode. This one allows you to replay previous levels to get better scores. Another new addition is the multiplayer. You have a wide arrange of modes, like Cops ‘n’ Robbers, Ram Jam and several others.

If you enjoyed the first part, then you’ll have fun with this one also. If you hated the first game then maybe you should reconsider your opinion and try to test it with a friend or so since the new additions in single- and multiplayer are quite nice.

PRO

  • more singleplayer options
  • multiplayer
  • lower difficulty setting
  • good for short play sessions

CON

  • bad voice overs
  • repetitive
  • irritating walk part
