Ever seen a puppet do Kung Fu? Probably you did as in 2005 PC gamers could get going with Rag Doll Kung Fu. The game didn't have much success with the general audience but thanks to its originality it got respect from the critics. Sony tries to appeal to a larger audience with Rag Doll Kung Fu: Fist Of Plastic. Maybe they'll succeed this time to combine action with comedy.
In Rag Doll Kung Fu: Fist Of Plastic everything is about the Rag Dolls. These dolls behave as puppets and have a weird notion of gravity. They stumble and walk clumsy which leads to hilarious moments. Rag Doll Kung Fu: Fist Of Plastic seems to be a combination of Super Smach Bros Brawl and LittleBigPlanet. Not that it's an equally good game as both giants but that's the feeling I got when I saw the Rag Dolls fighting in 2D. Not surprising that the game has some LBP feeling as the designer of this game is also one of the founders of Media Molecule.Next to the comedy we find a pretty standard fighting game without much bells and whistles. Next to kicks and punches you can also defeat opponents by using your Chi energy which allows to shoot fireballs, do flying punches or restore your health. To activate these special moves the SIXAXIS motion sensor is used. By shaking up and down heavily energy balls are created, turning over gives health regeneration and a downward movement activates a mini-earthquake. The SIXAXIS manages nicely to translate your movement to the attacks in the game but it's too complicated and too chaotic to get the precision that's so important for fight games.
Rag Doll Kung Fu: Fist Of Plastic can be played alone or with up to four players. In single player you need to finish challenges that vary from "defeat as many dolls as possible" to "hit as many targets as possible with your shuriken". Personally I found it too simple and too short but luckily there's a multiplayer addition with four modes: Deathmatch, King of the Hill, Capture the Fish and Dodgeball. Especially the latter delivers many hilarious and cursing moments. The idea is to kill your opponent by hitting him with a ball. This ball remains lethal even when it's hit a wall so with one throw you can easily kill three opponents or even yourself. What the game doesn't have is online multiplayer which is a big miss for a title like this.
Graphically things look fine. The cartoony style, the nice level design and the funny Rag Dolls make for a nice image. In total there are about eight maps but these unfortunately don't vary much. For the rest there are hardly any loading screens, no frame drops or glitches.
All in all Rag Doll Kung Fu: Fist Of Plastic is a fun game that will often bring a smile to your face and deliver plenty of hilarious moments. The single player isn't worth much but luckily you (hopefully) have some friends that will make it more difficult for you. Rag Doll Kung Fu: Fist Of Plastic is available in the Playstation Store for €8.99 which is a bit overpriced though.
