When previewing it, this game did seem okay, except for a few faults, but nothing that couldn’t be solved. Unfortunately not much has changed between the preview version and this review.
The game is rather based on the plot of the movies instead of really following it. The well-known (action) scenes and quotes certainly aren’t absent, but aside of that you’ll see things that were never in the movie. The emphasis in the game is more on the action, a good point, for the game at least, because the spirit of the movie is partly lost.
In the missions you play as one of the gang members and you’ll see how they ended up. Often you see the same places, but with another gang member. The circumstances might be different, but it still doesn’t do the variation any good. Your objective also stays the same: escape! Missions alternate between getting away on foot or by car.
So to flee, you can shoot your way out, but that’s not so easy because you have to aim first with the right mouse button. Another option is to take hostages, if you don’t mind progressing slowly. Moreover, hostages only hold on for a short while, after which they faint or refuse to continue.
On top of that it’s rather long-winded to lose the police like that. First they have to be forced to drop their weapons, then they have to walk to a wall and then they must sit on their knees or they will go after you. After a few times this certainly starts to be annoying.
A lot of shooting and killing will result in a psychopath rating, while hostage taking a professional’s sign is. Hovering somewhere in between means you’re a career criminal.
Those ratings are important to determine which of the tree endings you’re going to see and by collecting blueprints throughout the levels, artwork is unlocked. It all serves the replayability, most of you however won’t be motivated. All in all, the game is also rather short.
The only original voice is that of Michael Madsen, alias Mr. Blonde. The other voices are from other actors and so the characters in the game look a little different from those of the movie. Luckily the problems with synchronisation in the preview is solved. The songs from the movie return in this game.
It might be fun, if you don’t mind the cons.
