Scrap Metal, the second title in Microsoft's XBLA Block Party action, takes us back in time by giving us a classic top-down racer like R.C. Pro-Am. The difference with older games? The vehicles aren't only packed with horses under their hood, but also with rocket launchers, miniguns and giant saws that do the same thing as a can opener. Perfect to counter aggressors in traffic? Or do you still prefer that good old baseball bat?

Explaining Scrap Metal can be done very quickly: you choose a car that's armed to the teeth and turn your opponents into scrap. Luckily developer Slick Entertainment, also responsible for N+ on XBLA, managed to add some variation. In total there are eight tracks, with eight to ten missions and each time there's an endboss. Before you take him on, you'll have to complete all other missions by winning a race, thrash as many opponents as possible, or survive as long as possible. With the constant variation in missions, the game never gets boring.

Each car that gets destroyed goes to the scrapyard where you can fix it and equip to your own liking and use it in a newly unlocked race. Each car has its own strong points and shortcomings. Collecting cars, however, is limited as you can up only four at maximum. You want another? Then one has to be returned to the scrapyard. Choose wisely before you begin as for each finished mission you get a small amount of points which you can spend on upgrades which are totally useless if you constantly replace your car.

Playing can be done in two ways: with easy controls or a more advanced version for those that already are quite experienced with top-down racing. Starting players only need to push the left stick in the direction they want to go but when you want to go in reverse a problem appears. You need to hold the left trigger and constantly keep forgetting that which especially in hectic moments can cause you your life. And there's plenty of those.

The more advanced method on the other hand makes it too difficult. Here you drive in the point of view of the car. This makes left and right constantly change which constantly makes you wonder about the controls. Maybe that a trained top-down racer can handle this but in these modern times with cockpit view such players are probably a minority.

Most disappointing of the entire game are the graphics which don't manage to shine in anything. There's plenty of interaction on the track and everything looks decent, but that's it. The 2D drawings of the characters and bosses seem to have come from an old Need for Speed title which is still on store shelves in some village in the middle of nowhere. Clearly the weakest point in the entire game.
Scrap Metal can't be seen as a bad game as the quite extensive playing time brings plenty of fun. The constantly varying missions keep you interested and the right choice of weapons gives you the necessary thinking to do next to the brainless shooting. The controls do bring along some problems and keep feeling a bit awkward. Whether this title is worth 1200 Microsoft Points is hard to judge. We would suggest to first download the trial before spending your money on this.
