It's hard to not notice the lack of good sim games on the Nintendo Wii. Though the Wii-mote is supposed to be perfect for these games, the results are poor. I hoped the best for SimCity Creator, but my hopes and expectations were all in vain.

The concept of SimCity is well known. Build a city and make sure the amount of inhabitants keep increasing. You can achieve this by giving your people a healthy mix of industry, living areas and shopping centres. This off course, can't be achieved without electricity and water, not to mention roads and avenues. A good mayor also keeps track of his income and expenses. The gameplay isn't really that different from other SimCity games in the series.

EA did want to change the personality of the game, by implementing different characters from MySims that was released some time ago. They become the citizens of your city and could become your new advisors. You've got to pay these advisors though, and since they usually don't really give information that is slightly relevant, it's best to fire them immediately. For example, you've got an addicted gamer who can't stop babbling about insane combos. That's not even funny, especially if you realize he should be advising you on roadworks or your budget. It's better to ask the people of your city what they think should be dealt with.

But that's no reason to give SimCity Creator such an average score. The real reason for its low score are the annoying and illogical controls. You scroll the environment with the wii-mote, but you use the same movements for building roads and houses. And although you can build your own curvy roads, you wont, because it's too much stress to begin with it. Building roads and scrolling through the screen with the same movements? How do you come up with such an idea? It doesn't really seem like such a big deal, but playing like this works just as good as a shaving with razors in the dark.

You can choose to build your own town from scratch, or you can complete missions, which is pretty dull, because the missions are nothing more than a iteration of what you did when you were building your own city. The game has an online function, but fails to impress, lacking any real rankings. Could be fun, but it hardly is.

The graphics are far from mindblowing, but they get the job done (though the disaster sequences need some work). The same can be said about the music. Not great, but never annoying, which is good because annoying music in a simgame is asking for trouble.

I would almost congratulate the fellows at EA, but we can't forget controlling the game really sucks arse. Close but no cigar.

PRO

  • Building a city is fun

CON

  • Controls aren't
  • Advisors are stupid

If you took 20 minutes or so to actually learn the controls, you'd find that they are rather easy to master, and laying out roads, straight AND curved, can be done easily through zooming in, etcetera. But, in this age of instant gratification, it doesn't surprise me that the reviewer couldn't make any concerted effort.

It's not about a learning curve, it's about the fact that the controls are messy...

If you zoom in, you will be forced to move the screen too, unless you have a very steady hand.

Besides, it's difficult to learn how to ride a bike with one wheel... But is it worth all the pain if you succeed? Controls don't need to be studied, they need to be perfect without excuses. If the controls make me feel uneasy, this will be shown in the grades. I think that makes sense.

Catch my drift?
