With its PlayStation 3 debut, the SingStar series has received the biggest overhaul since...well... the very first SingStar. Will SingStar successfully defend its title of best karaoke game on the planet or will it have to watch out for EA's Rock Band?
The basics of the game haven't changed much. It's still all about scoring as much points as you can in the song of your choice.

Heeeeeeeee-yaaaaaaa!
You do that by keeping tone as well as you can (do notice I refrain from using the word 'singing'). The lines on the screen give you an idea of how high/low you have to sing and, when done correctly, you get points for that. For every line you get a rating (terrible, bad, ok, good, cool!) and if you manage to string good ratings together, you'll get bonus points. As always, the disc contains 30 songs and their official videoclip. But more on the tracklist later, first I'll talk about what's been changed in Sony's bestseller.

The most striking difference is of course the brand-new interface, that has received a Web 2.0 makeover (think Last.fm, YouTube, MySpace...).

Britney, when she was still hot
The new lay-out is very intuitive, not to mention attractive, and has successfully launched SingStar into the new generation of consoles. Also new is MySingStar Online. You can now create your own profile, where you can upload all kinds of pictures and movies you've recorded with the PlayStation Eye. It's like YouTube for SingStar. You can also view and rate other people's creations. Furthermore, your highscores and favourite songs are mentioned on your online profile page. It's interesting to note that all of the features of MySingStar Online are free.

The 30-track selection is one of the best thusfar, but this time there's no underlying theme (80s, 90s, Rock, Pop,...).

With sure party hits like Monster (The Automatic), Mr. Brightside (The Killers), I Don't Feel Like Dancin' (Scissor Sisters), America (Razorlight) and even an uncut stadium rock song like Chelsea Dagger (The Fratellis), I'm sure everyone will have a great time. Add to that pure classics like Losing My Religion by R.E.M. and Lovefool by The Cardigans and you simply have an amazing tracklist. Even Coldplay are making their SingStar debut (with Fix You), so start practising if you want to give Chris Martin a run for his money.

    The Automatic - Monster
Blink-182 - All the Small Things
    Blur - Coffee and TV
    The Cardigans - Lovefool

If 30 songs isn't enough for you, there's always the much-hyped SingStore,

The SingStore
where -as was to be expected in times where DLC is rife- you can download more tracks (1.49€/0.99£ per videoclip). At this time, around 50 tracks are available. That's not much (especially considering the fact that most of them have appeared on previous SingStar CDs), but Sony is constantly adding more. The SingStore is very easy to navigate and ordering new songs is a breeze. Another fine innovation by Sony.

With SingStar for PS3, Sony has succeeded in refreshing the trusted formula. MySingStar Online, the SingStore and the slick new interface will certainly appeal to a wide audiece and fans of the series will certainly appreciate the changes made. The tracklist is also a success; therefore I can wholeheartedly recommend this latest addition to the franchise to fans and newcomers alike.

PRO

  • Slick new interface
  • Excellent tracklist
  • SingStore

CON

  • At its core still the same game
  • Not much new content in the SingStore at this time
