Super Dragon Ball Z is a fight game, more specifically a simple and little surprising fight game! It's a console version of a Japanese arcade but unfortunately this only resulted in a couple of options and possibilities without combining it with a very deep gameplay

There's a training mode that allows you to get to know the different characters and their moves and attacks, a versus mode to do a quick fight against a friend, and an Arcade- as well as Survival mode where you need to defeat seven opponents. The difference between both is that in Survival you only have one life.

Pretty cool and surprising is the fact that you can create your own character (of course after choosing one of the basic models), color it up and give it a name. That way a bit of roleplaying is added since after each fight you get points that you can use to enhance your fighter with new attacks and moves. Thanks to the collecting of Dragon Balls you can also unlock extra surprises and new characters.

Once you've made your choice the fighting can begin. The controls are pretty simple and easy to learn, with two attacks, a block and a couple of throws. You can also make a double jump that makes you float in the air, but it doesn't really add something useful. Quite good is the balance between the different fighters. The amount of moves and attacks per person is limited but they are pretty complementary despite their very varied look. Robots, aliens, teenagers with big swords and housewives pass the revue.

Graphically everything falls on its feet, especially thanks to te fun and good design that we know so well from the comics and TV series. Surroundings and characters look like we want them to, with the typical colors and nicely animated moves. Veterans of the series will no doubt recognise a lot of their favorite TV show. Text balloons enhance the comic feeling even more without starting to bother or making it look like a gimmick. I only had the feeling that you aren't doing epic fights and that the makers could have put more attention to the bombastic effects, camera-handling and other details.

Plenty of detail was given to the music which was nicely taken from the series. Effects, soundtrack and voice-acting do not disappoint.

Super Dragon Ball Z is a game that will give the fans a series of fun moments. Those looking for a real fighting game will be disappointed by the little inspiring possibilities and the quite simplistic combat system. Graphically and soundwise everything is decent although you'll never get impressed. And that's a bit of a shame for a game based on a series that has its charm from its energy and anime-animations.

PRO

  • Creating your own character is fun
  • Anime-graphics are good
  • Very accessible

CON

  • Little depth in the combat system
  • Graphically sometimes too little impressive and explosive
  • Too little gameplay options
