We find back Guybrush Threepwood for the third time in this new series of Monkey Island in a rather difficult situation. Our pirate is still searching for a cure against the voodoo smallpox but on top of that he's lost Elaine again when he got swallowed by... a giant seecow. And take that giant part Gears Of War 2 giant as a large part of this episode plays in the insides of the animal. End goal? Finding La Esponja Grande of course.

During his quite moist adventures between intestines and bowels our anti-hero meets a bunch of stowaways and characters that were thought to be lost, including Coronado de Cava, an explorer who discovered that the cure for Guybrush's disease could handily be hidden in one of the sea-cow's favorite places. Your mission will be to convince the people present to help out as the animal swims in circles and that needs to be changed.

More puzzles and although you get very few environments to explore they feel fresh and welcome thanks to the unique location. The puzzles are also varied with a good balance between classic gameplay (collect objects, combine them and use them somewhere) and some other assignments like hooking up a desperate man with his dream date. It reminded me of amongst other things the surgery chair of episode 1, and that's a good thing. However, it doesn't justify that the makers were very greedy with new locations.

The quality of the script, the graphics, the jokes and voices did remain at the same high level. We could again enjoy some really funny moments, pieces of dialogue that you enjoy listening to instead of clicking away, and here and there a situation that manages to put a smile on your face.
My "criticism" remains just, though: the level of the first Monkey Island games is never reached but I guess we'll have to live with that. Those that are nostalgic to the genious of the old days just have to download the remake of The Secret of Monkey Island on Steam.

It seems that after two episodes the devs not only swiftly manage to write the jokes but also intended to tone back the difficulty degree a bit. It doesn't hurt the fun but does take away that additional layer of challenge the previous episodes had. Also the most difficult and most unlogical puzzles were the ones that thanks to their absurdity were hilarious. Easy also means you can finish quicker, but thanks to the good relationship between price and value from the previous episodes this is not a huge problem.
In the end we need to conclude that despite the decent quality the series has stalled with episode 3. With the second part you could notice a clear evolution, but with Lair of the Leviathan the devs seemed to have taken it easy. Less locations, easier and less inventive puzzles - eventhough there are a handful good ones - and a shorter playing time make this episode to be less than the previous ones. However, it's good enough to suggest to anyone and that's what we're doing. Those that weren't convinced yet can rest assured. For about 30 euros you get three decent to excellent episodes and there's two left to come in the future.

PRO

  • Still funny
  • Variation of location is nice
  • Handful interesting puzzles

CON

  • Too few different locations
  • Puzzles could be more inventive and greater in numbers
  • Difficulty degree drops down
