What's more fun than to give someone a good beating? Not a lot seeing the huge success of WWF tournaments in the US and beat'em ups throughout the world. As long as it's fake or virtual of course... With Tekken: Dark Resurrection the PSP gets another top title, Namco has put a lot of effort in it and next to a ton of characters, there's also a ton of moves.
This title can stand up to its brothers on the home consoles. Well... that's not completely true seeing that graphically it does look a bit square at times, but we do have to say that Tekken Dark Resurrection falls in the category of games like Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror. It looks like just when the PSP's popularity is going below freezing point on several continents we suddenly do get some fun things for this handheld. "If only we would have had such a lineup at launch" the slightly failed marketing team in Europe must have thought.
The storyline is as straight forward as it is unoriginal. There's again an Iron Fist tournament and the dozens of characters that compete all have their reason to win. Up to the kangaroo. You'll of course see a lot of familiar faces but also some new ones have been added. People, animals and demons enough to beat up.
During the tournament you'll need to win from friends and enemies in order to finally take on a madman in a vulcano. Before you've unlocked all storylines and bonuses you'll have played quite some hours which makes TDR a perfect means of relaxation during that long train travel to your work. If you don't go by train or don't have time to kill, don't worry. Tekken is as always entertaining enough to keep you occupied anywhere anytime. The whole feels familiar and the fresh and bright look makes that you'll never loose oversight, not even in the darker arenas.
As always the known modes like arcade, survival and time attack are present, but this time there's also a new one called "Ghost Mode". Here you decide to send your character to someone else while fighting so that this other person can fight you. A real multiplayer isn't present and it's the question whether this Ghost mode will ever become popular. And that's about the only downpoint I have to say about this title. Technically it's a pearl, bright and beautiful graphics, fantastic sound (use a decent headphone to fully enjoy the punches, low kicks, high kicks and taunts) and classically feeling controls).
