Google Earth with its satellite images has already brought us a lot of entertainment. Think of the unknowing, naked, sunbathing women or the many marketing dudes that are trying to get on the bandwagon with these unique images. A smart developer now has also seen the light and took as setting for his newest game, The Last Guy, satellite images of famous cities and locations and changed them into a virtual playing ground for survivors of a zombie-infestation.
The story is even simpler than you expect. A strange attack suddenly results in the majority of the world's population having lost most of their braincells and it looks like you're the only smart guy left. Quickly, however, it appears you're not the only lucky guy around and you can go looking for their hideouts to collect them and find a safer haven while dwelling in between zombies. As said, the locations are famous cities, brought to screen with these satellite pictures, and the the gameplay mostly consists out of saving increasingly more people with shorter deadlines and more aggressive zombies in 15 levels. You've got stamina that allows to run faster for a short while or gather all your followers. People who are saved keep following you in an ever increasing and less controllable line until you reach a "safe zone".
Extremely important during your walkabouts is your infrared map where you can see survivors and rescue paths, but not the zombies. You'll often have to plan and wonder which road you'll take and whether a shorter trip may be more dangerous. If the zombies get too close your friends will run towards nearby buildings and you'll lose precious time. On top of that you yourself are also in danger of getting killed.
Very simple concepts, but exciting and after a couple of levels even quite challenging. You'll quickly find yourself constantly in the neighborhoud of hostiles and the difference between success and death will become as thin as a piece of paper. Wet controller hands assured, especially in those levels where you have to do all kinds of stunts with large quantities of survivors just to get where you need to go.
If all this explanation makes you think you won't be able to spend more than a couple of hours on this game, you're right. Luckily it's also only a couple of hours long, but for the fans there's the possibility to register higher scores which will offer some additional playing fun.
The Last Guy is a nice game that's worth its money and offers some fun. The original idea to work with satellite images of known cities gives the whole some extra charm and those looking for some good entertainment for a Sunday afternoon won't regret this purchase.
