After having ported a bunch of SNES-titles, Nintendo has also brought several NES games to the handheld under the name of NES Classics. One of those is The Legend of Zelda, which was back in the days greeted as an instant classic. Does that still apply now ?
When starting a new game you're immediately bombarded into the "action", without even knowing what's going on. Luckily the back of the cover tells us that a sorcerer called Ganon has kidnapped prinses Zelda. Link is sent out to rescue her and during his search he'll first have to collect different pieces of the Triforce before being able to save her.
I'm fortunate that the manual suggested to head north as otherwise I would have wandered around for hours in the game before reaching something. The world in which Link lives is just a plain maze, all fields look alike and it even happens that a certain part continually gets repeated so that you get the feeling you'll walking in infinity and most probably will loose your wits.
The playworld is all but filled with fantasy, beautiful or even good in any way. First of all, Link is nothing more than a green/brown pixeldwarf that runs around between green and brown bowls and sticks, of which I assume they must be woods and rocks. Next to that you walk on a completely solid yellow ground where blue spots with green dots are present, that must be water! Luckily there are enough red and blue enemies walking around to make it just that bit more coloful. All together with the lovely bliep-bliep sound makes it pretty much perfect! NOT !
Ok, I shouldn't be too critical on the graphics as we're talking about a NES-title, but in my opinion Nintendo could have at least made sure the framerate wouldn't drop. When too many enemies appear on the scren and attack at the same time it almost looks like Nintendo has implemented the overly cool bullet-time in this game. Nothing is further away from the truth, it's just irritating framedrops.
The true Zelda fan may have fun with this but a seasoned gamer probably won't. Nintendo may sell this at a discount, 20 euros, but even that is too much if you ask me.
