Wallace is an inventor and Gromit is his dog. A very clever dag, ofter more clever than his boss even. Gromit therefore often has to solve the problems Wallace has gotten himself into thanks to his talent to attract trouble. This concept has resulted in several animated movies and series. Telltale Games now adds a game to that: Wallace & Gromit’s Grand Adventures. These adventures have been released in four episodes: Fright of the Bumblebees, The Last Resort, Muzzled and finally The Bogey Man.
In "The Bogey Man" we continue where the previous episode stopped: Ms. Flitt thinks Wallace asked her to marry him (while in fact he showed her a screw) and that misunderstanding now needs to get resolved. As Flitt doesn't want to listen to reason, there's nothing left but to come up with a plan to change her mind. You switch between Wallace and Gromit but there's not a lot of difference between the two. Comedy plays a big part and you quickly notice not to take things too seriously. Not that you'll be laughing your socks off all the time, but it's funny nonetheless. The puzzles are overall balanced and varied. Now and then you get some original versions on your plate like towards the end where you'll get to solve a human puzzle with as additional difficulty that certain people don't want to stand next to each other. Combining within your inventory is not possible so the core of the matter is in combining things you have with those in the outside world. Trying various possible combinations is also encouraged as even when you try out a non-fitting combination some funny things can happen. Overall the difficulty isn't hard enough to keep you stuck for long but it's not too easy either. The makers managed to create a nice balance which will not only appeal to young kids but also adults.
The controls are rather clumsy. It's not really point&click as your character moves with the arrow keys, and personally I would have preferred full mouse control. Also you can't move the camera which creates the typical problem at times: you need to do real stunts to have a decent look at the surroundings looking for clues. It's a lot more handy (and fun) if you can get a decent look, even if to enjoy the environment. Not that we get postcard views here, but since comedy plays a big role it's nice to actually see the subtle jokes in the decor.
So, all in all we're not getting a grand finaly, but there are still some nice parts present here and there. The overall experience, however, doesn't go much beyond average and eventhough it's fine to pass the time between two top games, it will never become a classic.
