Lately I've had the pleasure to receive quite a lot of fun games for my dear gamecube and then suddenly Winnie The Pooh: Rumbly Tumbly Adventures fell in my mailbox. With behind me a mother that almost couldn't stop laughing at me I went upstairs to check it out. Did I return a little later with a satisfying smile on my face or not ?
First of all I'll give you the enormously exciting storyline of this game. We're in a small town where a bunch of roaring people are coming towards our poor teddy. Luckily Winnie has an arsenal of weaponry along with him and withing a couple of seconds the monsters are shot to pieces by his shotgun. Not, I must have seen a bit too much of Resident Evil 4. The real story is a bit different.
While Winnie and his big human friend are wandering through the Great Acre Woods he suddenly gets a huge stomachache. No, there's no flesh eating monster about to come out of his belly... it's his hunger. Winnie starts daydreaming over all the fun birthday parties he's experienced in order to try and forget he's hungry.
That's it. You need to reply birthday parties. Of course there will be several problems in your search for the house of the birthday boy, an example of a typical WTPRTA-scenario; Winnie needs to cross a bridge but there's a piece of wood missing which results in a 15cm hole! Luckily one of Winnie's friends in the woods has seen a piece that fits and even tells him where to find it. Let's not make it too difficult!
On the way you'll encounter at least 2 different enemies: woezels and lollifants (ha-ha-ha!). These terrible animals won't to get our little bear but luckily there's always a balloon to be found in the vasinity. When Winnie explodes this balloon, the opponents disappear as if they were magically transported elsewhere.
Also Winnie can count on the help of bees a lot, in exchange for some honey they'll step aside to let you go through.
The things that will irritate you most is without a doubt the loading times. When entering a new field, the game needs a couple of seconds to load while we see a happy Winnie wandering around the screen. For a small kid this may not be so bothering seeing he'll probably already have problems with finding his way, but for the average gamer like you and me who doesn't stay longer than 1 minute in the same field, this is all but funny.
Next to this great adventure you can discover the Great Acre Woods in the Junior-game. Here you can walk around the woods without the difficult mission goals and activiate simple triggered events. In the end there's also some fun minigames for two players; collect as many cookies as possible within a certain timeframe, fun guaranteed!
On to the good points then, both the Great Acre Woods and Winnie and his friends are beautifully portrayed, the models are nicely rounded and the woods give the same cosy atmosphere as in the movies. This is also the first game where I didn't mind selecting "Dutch" in the language options seeing that the voice-acting is done by the original actors.
For the smallest amongst us this may be a dream of a game, but for kids as of 9 year this is pure hell. The loading times are obnoxious and the game is way too simple. Congrats to Ubisoft though for the beautiful looks of the world and delivering good voice-acting.
