WipEout HD did on the PS3 what everyone was hoping it would do: offers tons of futuristic racing fun and be noticed by its great technology. While the first WipeOut titles moved the beacons with the pulsating soundtracks it was this time the hair sharp cybervisuals that stole the showed. The only criticism we could formulate at the time was that the tracks were taken from the PSP version. And history seems to repeat itself with WipEout HD Fury.
Technically this game still looks breath-taking. The colorful visuals are an ideal way to show visitors what your 50" plasma is capable of! Eventhough we know the promised constant 1080p at 60FPS here again gets achieved by the same tricks as with its predecessor, the result remains astonishing to watch and immerse yourself. Tracks are still as impossible, terrifyingly fast and filled with challenges at every curve, jump or magnet-assisted roll.Fury is as you may know only downloadable and works as an expansion to WipEout HD. In exchange for the 700MB and 10 euros you get a semi-new game with a lot of fresh content, including menus that have received a new skin and music. Instead of a sci-fi feeling you now get that same sci-fi identity added with a decent dose of fury and passion. Attention for detail, value for money and passie for your product is what we call that!
The package of course also has a couple of new tracks: The Amphiseum, Talons Junction, Modesto Heights and Tech De Ra. And you can also play them in the opposite direction. Only small downer is that those that have both WipEout Pulse and Pure for the PSP will already know these tracks: they've been ported from those games. Of course they look quite a lot better but it remains unfortunate that not one really new circuit was added. For your money you also get a new campaign mode that offers equal amount of challenges as the original game, three new modes for the PS3 version, thirteen new designs for the vehicles and the necessary Trophies to extinguish your collection habbit.
Especially the three new modes give you the feeling that this download has given WipEout HD a new life and offers more variation.
The first is Eliminator where you get rewarded for dealing damage and punished for getting it. Instead of focusing on the next curve you go rushing to the weapons to shoot your opponents to pieces and it's very cool to see your ship make a 180° turn and look your enemy in the eyes when firing missiles with a new move that's been added.
Zone Battle, the second newcomer, goes further where the hypnotizing Zone stopped. In the same world of pulsating colors you try to evade or stop each other by activating pads. You need to find a good balance between activating your own boosts and setting up traps for those behind you, while protecting yourself from the same activity by your opponents. One of my favorites!
Detonator changes th egame is some sort of race-shooter where leaderboards and highscores become the most important thing. You race through the tracks that are filled with mines you need to shoot or blast. The difficulty is that more and more obstacles will be in your way and it becomes increasingly difficult to do rounds without taking damage.
So, a lot of extra stuff to put your teeth in, and the only criticism we dare give is that for our money we would have liked to see at least one completely new track, or some more remakes of oldies we didn't get to play on the PSP.
Fury is a bargain for those that like WipEout HD. Tons of new content, more variation, new modes and a second life by for the tracks and rides already installed on your harddrive. A must for lovers of futuristic racers has become a must-have even more.
